Chairman’s Blog - Season 2, Edition 4 (September 2023)
-
Well, it’s been a very busy ‘summer of fun 2023’ here at the club, as we begin to slow down a tad for the month of September.
-
But fear not, although the kids are back at school, summer is far from over!
-
September is a great month here on the Costa Calida and the weather is still beautiful, hot, and sunny. There is also so much to see and do this month in the region.
-
August was superb at La Quinta and my family; my friends and I had a truly fabulous time during our stay (see below).
-
It was great to meet up and socialise with so many of you.
-
Thanks to all our members, guests and visitors who support the club, dining in La Solana, drinking at the bar and attending our hosted events, you are all helping make La Quinta one of the best vacation spots at La Manga Club.
-
Also, a big shout out to all our staff, who work exceptionally hard, to deliver for you the best holiday experience. It is really tough working during the height of summer with such high temperatures and humidity, so don’t forget to recognise their service by tipping generously when you leave.
-
Away we go then with Season 2 blog #4, bursting with updates and information for the month of September about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. This, as always, is sent directly to your email inbox, but it is also accessible on our website see…Chairman's Blog (laquintaclub.com) Enjoy!
Meet the staff
For September’s edition I am featuring two more members of our La Quinta staff; Casi Vélez Martínez a newer member from housekeeping and our vivacious second longest serving La Solana waitress, Priya Sohal.
Casi Vélez Martínez
-
Casi is 52 years old, is part of our housekeeping team and is one of our newer members of staff, although she was first worked at La Quinta as part of an outside contracted cleaning company.
-
In 2018 she was employed directly for a short time to cover for an existing member of staff, who was on sick leave.
-
She found the other staff really helpful and thoroughly enjoyed working with them, so much so that when offered a permanent position in January this year, she accepted immediately.
-
Casi was born in nearby Cartagena but now lives in the fishing village of Portman which she says has a beautiful beach and is surrounded by mountains.
-
She is married to Juan and has two daughters Natalia (aged 16) and Carla, who is 22 years old.
-
Her hobbies are hiking, travelling (whenever possible), going out with friends, and of course shopping.
-
Casi’s favourite foods are rice-based dishes, such as the regional speciality ‘Caldero’, a dish whose ingredients include seafood, lobster, octopus, and vegetables.
Priya Sohal
-
I am sure you are all familiar with our cheeky waitress, Priya, who is always smiling and joking either in La Solana or at the pool bar.
- Priya is 37 years old and was born in Punjab India.
- She is quite an academic and holds two bachelor’s degrees, one in science and another in teaching education.
-
Indeed, Priya was a teacher for some 10-years before leaving India with her husband in 2010 to live and work in Spain.
-
She began working for us at LQC back in 2011 but took a 2-year break after having a baby. She resumed again in 2016 and has been with us continuously since then.
-
Priya lives in Los Belones and is married to Vikas, a talented chef who works at restaurant Canela and sometimes here in La Solana.
-
They have one daughter named Avika who will soon be 9-years old.
-
Priya enjoys travelling and listening to music and although she loves working at LQC, she says it is her dream to complete an MBA.
Update on August events
-
August continued-on from July, with very hot weather throughout the region of Murcia and further heatwaves during the month.
-
As with July, La Manga Club’s average daily temperature in August again averaged around 32˚C!
-
Our saxophonist @alexsanchezsaxo returned for the 2nd half of the month to play at our Wednesday pool parties after we had featured DJ Loric for 4-weeks.
![]() |
![]() |
-
The pool parties have been very popular and extremely well attended.
-
Our selection of artists; Laly, Juan (saxo), Vanessa Soul, Connecta2 and Two-Twenties also entertained us throughout the month, providing a different musical experience for members and guests on Monday nights. All were very well received, particularly Juan with his illuminated saxophone and laser beam gloves!
-
On Sunday 20th August the Women’s World Cup final between Spain & England took place. It was shown live in La Solana to a large group of supporters. Sadly, England lost 1:0 but big congratulations to Spain the women’s football world champions.
-
If you will indulge me, I would like to provide you with a quick round-up of my personal summer experiences at La Quinta this year.
-
I was out with family and friends for 3-weeks from 22nd July and have to say we all had a truly fantastic time. One of the best years ever!
-
It really felt like things had properly returned to normal with the pandemic a distant memory.
-
It was very hot (as it always is in summer), and the club was very busy, but I am happy to report there were no problems with sunbed reservations and that the kids club was very popular.
-
Lunchtimes were also extra busy with over 100 patrons most days. The staff all coped extremely well, notwithstanding the high temperature they had to work in.
-
My family and I attended each of the Monday night dinners, (featuring a different entertainer each week) and all three nights were fabulous. The menu was first class with different cuisine being offered each week. All three were well attended by around 100+ guests, including tables from non-residents.
-
For the first time, we offered an evening kids club, so parents could relax for a while and enjoy their meals.
-
All three pool parties I went to were also really buzzing, and we featured a Brazilian themed party during my second week. Much fun was had by both children, teenagers, and adults alike. Lots of drinks and cocktails were consumed as well as pizzas, chips, hot dogs, and sushi.
-
Adventure divers visited us each week and were very popular, with a number of families, (both adults and children) signing up to undertake courses or to go diving with them.
-
Stephanie & I went to check out the hotel one evening, which I have to say has been nicely refurbished and now has a feature circular cocktail bar. Most of the restaurants are inside but we ate at ‘Asia’ where there is an option to sit on the small outside terrace. The service and food were very good, and the owner/members 20% discount certainly softened the blow when the bill arrived!
-
My daughter Harriett and her boyfriend Matthew went to ‘Don Luigi’ on the same night and said it was also very good.
-
It was particularly nice to have met up again with an ex-member, (who joined in 1987) and was a huge club stalwart, George Todd. George was a summer regular with his wife Sue, who sadly passed away recently.
-
He was visiting La Quinta for the first time in a while, with his daughter Jennifer and his two grandchildren Georgia & Connie - 3-generations at the club together!
-
I was delighted that they joined us on our table at the Monday night dinner. Hope to see you again next year George.
-
A word of caution! A number of us went on an evening sunset boat trip with a company called ‘Flippaboat’. Although we enjoyed the evening (mainly because of the company), it didn’t live up to expectations with a failure to deliver some important elements, (such as no safety briefing). There was no inclusive drink or complimentary Cava offered as promised, no pricelist for on-board drinks and little interaction from the crew. I would suggest that the craft was more akin to a water taxi than a tour boat. I would therefore strongly advise against using this company. There are many other operators around that I am sure offer a better experience.
-
Lastly, we had a small number of guests who had medical issues during my stay. I am happy to report all are now fully recovered and are doing fine. I must say that the on-site La Manga Club doctors, the attending ambulance service and medical treatment provided at Cartagena hospital were absolutely top drawer and could not be faulted.
-
This is a level of service not available in many other resorts and ought to give huge confidence to any of our members or guests, should they ever become unwell whilst at the club.

Carthaginians and Romans Festival in Cartagena, 15th -24th September 2023
-
A very important festival takes place in Cartagena in September, so I thought it may be interesting to describe the activities that take place and to provide some detail of the history underpinning it.
-
For 10-days during the 2nd fortnight of September, Cartagena hosts the annual Carthaginians and Romans Festival.
-
A huge festival site next to the Estadio Cartagonova, is transformed into an ancient city, where both locals and tourists take part in the re-enactment of historical events, from the Second Punic War.
-
The area becomes home to many temporary bars, food stalls and craft markets where participants, dressed in elaborate costumes, come to enjoy the festivities.
-
Major events which are commemorated include the foundation of the ancient city of Carthage (Qart Hadasht) by the Carthaginian general Asdrubal the Beautiful (227 BC), the departure of Hannibal to Rome and the conquest of the city by Scipio Africanus in 209 BC.
-
The festival has remained virtually unchanged year on year and all events are free of charge, except for the ‘Great Roman Circus’. For some events, there is a small charge for seats, although it is always possible to stand at no cost.
-
See Carthagineses y Romanos - Fiestas de Carthagineses y Romanos (cartaginesesyromanos.es) for more programme information.
History
-
Between 1500 BC and 300 BC, the Phoenicians, (a seafaring civilization), lived mainly along the coast of modern-day Lebanon, Israel, Gaza, Syria and Turkey but also established colonies, which included Carthage, an ancient city in modern-day Tunisia that became the capital of the Carthaginian’s.
-
The Cartagenian’s became a major threat to the Roman Empire during the three Punic Wars, which took place between Rome and Carthage from 264 BC to 146 BC.
-
The 2nd Punic War, which lasted from 218 BC to 201 BC is the basis for the Festival of Romans and Carthaginians, a war that began after Hannibal’s Carthaginian army attacked the Roman town of Saguntum (modern-day Sagunto, near Valencia) in 219 BC.
-
After fierce battles, an 8-month siege ensued, which ended with the entire population being slaughtered when they refused to accept Hannibal’s conditions of surrender.
-
Hannibal then set up a base at New Carthage (Carthago Nova), which became modern-day Cartagena and from where he and his 90,000 strong army (and 37-elephants), marched north through the Pyrenees and the Alps to Rome itself.
-
However, 10-years later (in 209 BC), at the Battle of Cartagena, the Roman general Scipio successfully led an attack on the city, which culminated in its occupation by the Roman Empire until 435 AD, when it was overcome by a Germanic people called the Vandals.
Evolution of the Carthaginians and Romans Festival in Cartagena
-
In 1972 a tragic accident at the end of the Fiestas del Carmen y Santiago caused the death of ten people and as a result, the city did not host any popular festivals until 1990, when the first Carthaginians and Romans event was held.
-
Only about 600 people (10 troops and 7 legions), took part in that first festival, when the main characters of Hannibal, Scipio, Himilce and the Great Lady of Rome were established.
-
In subsequent years the number of participants continued to grow and new characters from the 2nd Punic War were unveiled in 1993 the festival was officially recognised as being of Regional Tourist Interest.
-
The following year saw the participation of 25 troops and legions, which was the maximum number allowed and in 1996 the festivities were recognised by the Association of Historical Festivals of Spain.
-
In 1999 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the festival, the event was recognised as being of National Tourist Interest.
-
Continued growth saw major infrastructural improvements in the festive camp and visitors were allowed to watch the Great Battle from the top of the Sea Wall.
-
In 2016 the Festival of Carthaginians and Romans in Cartagena received the institutional backing of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and the following year it was officially recognised as being of International Tourist Interest.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 2, Edition 3 (August 2023)
-
It’s hello again from me. The months really do seem to come around quickly. No sooner have I finished one blog; I am starting the next one.
-
Anyway, here we go with August’s blog, as we reach the height of the summer at La Manga Club!
-
La Quinta is extra busy right now and has a great holiday vibe. It’s continuing to be the ‘summer of fun’ 2023 here at the Club.
-
Guests have been having a fantastic time around the pool, at the pool parties and on Mondays for our drink’s reception and gala dinners. The Wednesday pool party on 26th July was superb and continues until well after 10pm.
- The good news is that Spain is better value for money this summer with the exchange rate around €1.16 to the £.
-
Our staff work amazingly hard and although I am sure most of you do, please don’t forget to recognise the excellent service they provide by leaving them a tip. This can be done when you check out either in cash or added to your final bill.
-
I am current on holiday with my family, having arrived on the 22nd July and as I finish this month’s blog, I can tell you, not only it is very hot here, but we are all having a really superb but busy time.
-
So many friends to catch up and go out to dine alfresco with during the warm summer evenings.
-
Season 2 blog #3, it is then, packed full of updates and information for the month of August about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. This, as always, is sent directly to your email inbox, but it is also accessible on our website see…Chairman's Blog (laquintaclub.com) Enjoy!
Meet the staff
Meet the staff is back!
After last month’s hiatus, this month it is the turn of our longest serving waitress, Antonia Sanchez Sanchez and of Pablo Ibarrola Vera from our accounts department.
Antonia Sanchez Sanchez
I am sure that most of you know Antonia well, as she is the longest serving member of our waiting staff, but here is her bio for you to get to know her even better.
-
Antonia is 55, but will be 56 this month on 16th August, so don’t forget to wish her happy birthday and to buy her a drink!
-
She was born in Cartagena but has lived in El Algar since she was a teenager.
-
As you know, Antonia speaks fluent English as a result of having worked in the UK for 3 years in the ‘90’s, before returning to Spain.
-
She started working at La Quinta, as a waitress, back in 1998 having been introduced by Mariano, who used to work here. She was interviewed by Enrique and Sue who were both sufficiently impressed to offer her the job on the spot!
-
She has two children, a son David (aged 28) & a daughter Daniela (aged 14) who is a very good basketball player.
-
Antonia enjoys travelling with her children, attending basketball competitions and spending quality time with her friends.
Pablo Ibarrola Vera
Pablo is 52 years old and has been working as our financial controller at La Quinta Club for 10-years.
-
He was born in Lausanne (the French speaking part of Switzerland), although both his parents are Spanish and lived there until he was 29, before moving to Murcia.
-
Pablo has been married to Carmen (who works as a psychologist in secondary schools), for 19 years and has two children, Marko (aged 16) and Javier (aged 12).
-
During his studies, he spent a year in England, (6-months in London and 6-months in Leeds), and as a result speaks excellent English.
-
Pablo's favourite sport is tennis, and he is a member of the same tennis club as ATP world no.1 - Carlos Alcaraz, and I am sure he will be delighted with Carlos’s recent Wimbledon win!
-
Pablo has also umpired at several different international ATP tournaments himself.
-
These days however, he is content to watch his children competing in tennis competitions.
-
He also very much enjoys spending his time during Summer in nearby Los Alcázares, with family and friends.
-
Pablo says he is very happy and contented working at La Quinta.
Cities that now fly to Region of Murcia Airport (RMU)
- Here is a useful map showing all the carriers and European cities that currently connect with Corvera airport.
Thinking of exploring the local area by bus?
-
There are many bus routes serving the Costa Calida, but route 46 is a particularly good one, as it links many costal locations along the Mar Menor.
-
Connecting numerous towns from the North of the Mar Menor to the South, it runs from San Perdro del Pinitar to Cabo de Palos and vice versa.
-
See below for the route planner.
Stop Press: Hollywood Filming of ‘Venom 3’ in Cartagena

-
Four of them are reasonably local to La Manga Club.

-
It is the only Murcian representative to be included in this list, according to the publication Las Gastrocrónicas.
E-Bikes⚡️
-
Want to get around La Manga Club and the local area in an environmentally friendly way, but don’t want to hire a car, then why not consider an e-bike?

Use of mobile devices in vehicles
-
Following on from my article in May’s blog about driving in Spain, here is some additional information regarding driving and the use of mobile devices.
-
As they are contributory for more than 300 deaths a year in Spain, it is an offence to use one whilst driving. Even holding such a device can result in a fine of €200.
-
This prohibition of using or holding a mobile device also applies when the vehicle is stationary in traffic.
-
However, you may use the device.
-
if an approved hands-free system is fitted to the vehicle or,
-
when using mapping apps, provided the route is inputted into the device before driving commences.
-
In addition, the device must be placed in an approved fixed support that does not impair the driver’s vision and so that both hands can remain on the steering wheel.
-
Drivers cannot then touch the said mobile device until they have stopped in a safe, convenient, and legal location.
-
A driver carrying the mobile device in their hand (even if not using it), or using it in the fixed support whilst driving, can also be fined up to €200.
-
Note: These rules apply to all vehicles! Not just motor cars, but bicycles, electric scooters buggies etc.
Update on July events
-
July saw some extremely high temperatures as the region of Murcia experienced the European wide (except the UK so it seems), ‘Cerberus’ heatwave.
-
La Manga Club’s average daily temperature in July averaged around 30˚C….phew!!
-
We have continued to feature our brilliant saxophonist @alexsanchezsaxo at our Wednesday pool parties and the members love him and the sound of his saxophone. However, from 18th July we are featuring DJ Loic, who will be providing the sounds for us for the next 4-weeks.
-
Adventure Divers, who were visiting us on Monday’s have changed to Sunday afternoon at 3pm for their try dives in the pool. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this great underwater activity. Members/guests really seem to enjoy it.
-
La Solana has been very busy indeed regularly serving in excess of 100 meals daily at lunchtime!
-
Likewise, our Monday night dinners, which now feature a different performer each week, have been really well attended too with upwards of 80+ attending weekly, throughout the month, so thank you all for supporting the Club.
-
On 23rd July LQC hosted a lovely birthday party for Ailsa Alsop the wife of Ian, a former committee member. Lots of friends and family attended.
-
Both Wimbledon finals were shown in La Solana on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th, with a group of 12-Spanish nationals joining members to cheer on the eventual men’s winner, local boy, Carlos Alcaraz in a very exciting match! My congratulations to him as well as the ladies’ winner the unseeded Czech, Marketa Vondrousova.
-
On 26th July we had an unexpected visit from one of our members of staff, Lorena who has recently given birth to a gorgeous little girl called Atenea. Congratulations to her and her partner. Laura was beside herself with excitement acting as a pseudo grandma!
- The La Manga Club General Community magazine was published for the first time in about 5-years, on 12th July with a publication event held at the Owners Club House. Laura kindly attended as LQC’s representative.
- Look out for it, as it contains not only a La Quinta advertisement but also a 3-page feature article about the club. It will be available in hard copy but also online via this link; https://www.lamangaclubcommunity.com/la-manga-magazine/ or in info+ on our website: +Info (laquintaclub.com)
- Another publication to check out is the ‘La Manga Life Online Golf Supplement’, which was published on 9th July. As with the GC magazine we are featured, but in a full-page advertisement, aimed towards encouraging sporting groups and those coming for sporting holidays, see https://pub.marq.com/06433f2f-67b3-4c9a-a3f1-bef9c518f12d/
- If members would like a copy of the poster for their golf/tennis clubs, gyms etc, please ask at reception.
Events and Activities for August 2023
-
August, the height of summer is now really upon us as we brace ourselves for the 2nd half of the busy 2-month school holiday period.
-
As with July, we will have completely full occupancy throughout the month.
-
I would like to highlight five things:
-
restaurants fill up very fast in the summer months, so to avoid disappointment, pre-booking is important, (even pre-arrival in some cases). Many establishments now do on-line booking only and often require a credit card deposit to confirm a reservation.
-
make sure you book your car rental/taxi transfers in good time. Both get booked up quickly in the summer.
-
again, with the very high temperatures we are experiencing, please don’t forget to regularly hydrate and to apply extra sunblock. There is nothing worse than getting sunstroke or sunburnt, particularly if it’s the little ones!
-
LQC members receive a discount on the price of food and drink at La Solana and the pool bar. This is deducted from the advertised price (non-member price), at the point of purchase.
-
lastly the Grand Hyatt hotel now offer LQC members, (black card holders) and their families a 20% discount in their on-site restaurants.
Two wonderful areas of Murcia to discover this August
Fancy a visit to the Salto del Usero?
-
Just over an hour’s drive from La Quinta, is the fabulous Salto Del Usero.
-
Located in the beautiful town of Bullas, it is one of the best natural wonders of the region of Murcia.
-
A magical place where water, vegetation and natural erosion have created an unique environment.
-
In the summer months you can bathe in the naturally formed pools and appreciate the spectacular waterfalls. Whilst during the cooler times of the year, wooden pathways and discovery trails provide a scenic walking route through this hidden paradise.
-
Free parking is available on Calle del Río, 25, 30180 Bullas, Murcia, which is about a 20 minutes’ walk from the Salto del Usero.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 2, Edition 2 (July 2023)
-
Here we are already with July’s blog, I can’t believe we are halfway through the year, the months are certainly coming thick and fast.
-
Hello then to the month of July here on the ‘Costa Calida’. A month with cloudless blue skies, sunny days by the pool or on the beach and long steamy evenings to relax and enjoy the sunsets, wonderful Mediterranean cuisine, exotic drinks, and great entertainment that the region has to offer. It’s all set to be a summer of fun!
-
The La Manga vibe really starts to kick in during July, as the school summer holidays get underway.
-
Al fresco dining is definitely de rigueur this month for breakfast, lunch & dinner, but don’t forget the mozzie spray for your evenings out.
-
Taking part in water sports is also a must in July, whether in the pool, the Mar Menor or in the Med. See my article on this below.
-
So off we go then with Season 2 blog #2, providing you with updates and information for the month of July about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. This, as always, is sent directly to your email inbox, but it is also accessible on our website Chairman's Blog (laquintaclub.com) Enjoy!
Meet the staff
-
There is no ‘meet the staff’ feature this month, but fear not, it will return in August. For July I am focussing on a retiring member of our La Quinta family….Fina Vicente Hernandez.
Farewell to Fina
-
As many of you will know, Fina Vicente Hernandez (from reservations), retired on 14th June.
-
She was one of our longest serving members of staff having completed nearly 37-years at La Quinta.
-
Working in partnership with her long-standing colleague and close friend Carmen, she has dealt effectively and efficiently with untold bookings, allocations, rentals and queries for members and guests over the years.
-
Fina was greatly loved by all her colleagues who gave her a wonderful farewell send-off with Cava, cakes & presents, before (as is customary at LQC), throwing her into the swimming pool!
-
It was a privilege for me to be in attendance and to be able to say goodbye to Fina personally.
-
I, along with her colleagues and our members will miss her and would like to thank her for her time and dedication here at La Quinta and to congratulate her on her retirement.
-
There is no doubt that we will see her from time to time, as she is always welcome back here at the club. I told her personally ‘not to be a stranger’.
-
I understand that Fina and her husband Bruno both intend to be very active in retirement and are looking at taking some holidays and to do lots of travelling.
-
Fina’s role has been taken over by May, and although they are big shoes to fill, I am certain May will rise to the task.

Owners Clubhouse Summer Dress Code 1st April - 31st October
-
If you are thinking of visiting the Owners Club House this summer, please be aware that they operate a dress code.
-
Whilst they acknowledge that La Manga Club is a leisure resort, some attire is deemed unacceptable in the clubhouse. Unless otherwise stated, the following dress code applies inside the clubhouse, the restaurant and on the outside terrace, at all times.
-
Smart casual for 16's and over.
-
No headwear inside the building.
-
No sleeveless vests or singlets, beachwear, or casual sportswear (football shirts etc).
-
The exceptions are:
-
Controlled sports classes on the premises such as Pilates.
-
Golf or tennis attire after a match until 7pm.
-
After 7pm the general dress code is 'smart casual', unless there is a specific 'dress code' for a particular event.
-
For gentlemen: long trousers or smart tailored shorts with a collared shirt (general or polo) and closed shoes.
-
For Ladies a 'respectful' restaurant style dress. Summer sandals are acceptable but not beach footwear.
Guidance for the use of buggies at La Manga Club
-
Whilst out at the club in May & June I observed numerous buggies being driven around the La Manga Club, many by young people and sadly often in a reckless manner.
-
So, I mention this again to anyone thinking of hiring a Buggy whilst at La Manga Club, please be aware of the rules and regulations regarding their potential use.

On the 7th June the long await ‘Reception’ was signed between Inmogolf and the Cartagena Town hall along with the agreed Collaboration agreement between the General Community and the Cartagena Town Hall.
-
On the 14th June an EGM for the La Manga Club Presidents was held, at La Solana in regard to the purchase of the ‘La Manga Owners Clubhouse’ from the current landlords Inmogolf. The presidents unanimously voted in favour of the said purchase. Full details of the proposed purchase and minutes of the meeting are available in the members section of our website.
-
Lastly some positive news regarding Las Lomas village. It has re-opened under the management of the ONA hotel group. However, this has been tempered by some not-so-great reviews as to the initial management, facilities available etc. It is early days and I trust things will improve.

Events and Activities for July 2023
-
So, July is already upon us as we brace ourselves for the really busy summer holiday period.
-
Again, we will have full occupancy throughout the month.
-
Restaurants fill up fast in the summer months, so early pre-booking is often essential and due to regular no-shows, some establishments now do on-line booking only and often require a credit card deposit.
-
Also don’t forget to book your car rental or taxi transfers in good time, as both get booked up quickly in the summer.
-
Just a reminder that LQC members and families receive a 20% discount at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
-
To ensure fair sunbed allocation and pool safety, some revised pool rules have been written. These will be included in your pre-arrival welcome email.
-
To prevent the potential for ear infections etc and to help keep our pool clean, please shower before entering the main or spa pool.
-
Lastly don’t forget the sun is extra strong and the UV rays very intense during the summer, so make sure you regularly apply a high SPF sunscreen (particularly to your little ones), and after having been in the pool.
-
Lastly the La Manga Club General Community magazine is due for publication imminently. Look out for it, as it contains not only an advertisement but a feature article about LQC

Three spectacular place to visit in the Region of Murcia
-
The Gebas Ravine, also known as the Barranco de Gebas, is located between the mountains of Sierra Espuña and Sierra del Cura, next to the towns of Gebas and Fuente Librilla.
-
Declared a location of the 8-protected landscapes, it is one of the most spectacular places of natural beauty in the region. It includes the turquoise waters of the Algeciras reservoir, contrasting against the almost white mountain rocks. Built in 1995 it is part of the ‘General Defence Plan’ against floods in the Segura River basin and is an exceptional place for hiking and bird watching.

-
Near to the town of La Azohia, the Castillitos Military Battery, locally known as Batería de Castillitos, is another scenic place to visit and is a real hidden treasure!
-
The gun battery was built between 1933 and 1936 to prevent enemy ships attacking the important port and military arsenal at Cartagena. The Bateria de Castillitos military buildings are also of impressive construction, built in style reminiscent of an ancient medieval castle. Some of the highlights are the huge 381mm guns with 17m long barrels. The Castillitos Battery is free to visit and is open all year round.

Located just a few kms from the historic town of Aledo, on the southern slopes of Sierra Espuña, is the impressive natural canyon known as the Straits of Arboleja or Estrecho de la Arboleja. The small canyon was formed over thousands of years by water sculpting the limestone rock. Hundreds of metres in length and between ten and fifteen metres in high there are small sources of water, spectacular limestone formations and small lagoons, making the area a unique paradise.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 2, Edition 1 (June 2023)
- After a full year of publishing the blog, we kick off Season 2, #1 with a warm welcome to the month of June from me and all at La Quinta at La Manga Club.
- June in my humble opinion, is one of the best months here on the ‘Costa Calida’, with temperatures beginning to build and long balmy evenings to enjoy Spanish hospitality.
- La Manga really starts to come alive in June as the holiday season begins to get underway.
- There’s nothing better than dining al fresco for breakfast & lunch on the terraces, having fun at the pool parties as well as enjoying Monday evening dinners under the stars with great food, service, and entertainment.
- The water temperature is much warmer too now, perfect for water sports such as swimming, snorkelling, diving, or boating on the Mar Menor or in the Med.
- As with almost every month this year so far, we are virtually fully booked.
- La Solana continues to go from strength to strength, enhanced by our chef Adrián showcasing his culinary skills, (particularly his daily specials) and Céline with her upbeat management style and front of house attentiveness.
- Our newly purchased table football game has also been well received and seems popular with both children and adults alike. Perhaps we should run some La Quinta table-football premier league competitions?
![]() |
- Off we go then with Season 2 blog #1, providing you with updates and information for the month of June about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. This, as always, is sent directly to your email inbox, but it is also accessible on our website Chairman's Blog (laquintaclub.com) Enjoy!
Meet the staff
So far, I have introduced no less than 24 members of our La Quinta family, and I am pleased to present numbers 25 & 26. This month it is the turn of Mª José Sánchez Casanova and Juan Asensio Mateo.
Mª José Sánchez Casanova
- Mª José is 44 years old and works in the housekeeping department.
- She was born in Cartagena, where she lived until 2001, before moving to the Escombreras Thermal Power Plant area south of Cartagena.
- After returning to Cartagena in 2008, she relocated to and currently lives in Islas Menores next to Mar de Cristal on the Mar Menor.
- She began working at La Quinta as part of a cleaning subcontract company in 1996 but in 2003, we hired her directly and she became a permanent employee.
- Mª José s hobbies are travelling and listening to music.
- She is separated but really enjoys spending time with her family.
- Mª José also says she is very happy and contented to be working at La Quinta.
Juan Asensio Mateo
- Juan is a supervisor and also works in the housekeeping department. He is 60 years old, was born in Cartagena, but now lives in Llano del Beal.
- He has been working at LQC for 35 - years having started on the 1st of August 1988, as an assistant waiter.
- However, after only 2-months he transferred to housekeeping where he has been ever since.
- Juan has been married to María Teresa Mayol, (who is a primary school teacher in La Unión), for 33 years.
- They have three children; María Teresa, 32 years old (a primary teacher in Torre Pacheco), Laura María, 31 years old (a primary care physician) and Juan Gabriel who is 12 years old.
- In addition, they also have two grandchildren, Alberto (34 months) and Avril (19 months), respectively, with another grandchild on the way!
- Juan's favourite sport is basketball, and he is actually a national coach and president of the Sierra Mar Basketball Club. He also engages in trekking, padel tennis & cycling.
- Another one of Juan’s past times is cooking, especially traditional Spanish regional dishes such as 'Caldero', a Murcian style rice dish.
- Juan says he really enjoys working with and for his wonderful La Quinta family colleagues and members both past and present.
Update on May events
- During May, our pool parties continued, as did the scuba try dives and Bubblemaker courses with ‘Adventure Divers’ and of course our Monday night dinners featuring revised formats and new artists.
- As said above, we have been varying the format, the entertainment, and the food offerings at our Monday night dinners.
- Roast beef or gammon have been available on some weeks rather than BBQ and we have also introduced waiter service for the main course, with special dishes on selected nights.
- I am pleased to say that the feedback received regarding these variations of food and entertainment has been most positive.
- On the 7th May we held a coronation party, which was well attended and enjoyed by all.
- The clubhouse and terraces were decked with union flags, balloons, and pictures of the King. Thanks to team La Quinta for making it happen.
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
- There was also an amazing selection of food, including a specially baked ‘coronation quiche’.
![]() |
- As our excellent special breakfast promotion has also been well received, we are extending it throughout the year.
- 4 x breakfasts for only €40. So now you can take advantage of this great deal all year round.
![]() |
- We also held three very successful private events; the Los Olivos community dinner on Friday 19th, a private party on Saturday 20th May, which by request, featured Flamenco dancers and a birthday party on the 30th.
- On 29th May, we hosted a themed Monday night event the ‘La Quinta Masquerade Ball’ with the very talented singing duo of Alex & Chloe providing the musical entertainment. It was a fabulous night, really well attended (95+), with many guests dressing up and nearly everyone wearing a mask.
- The winners of the most innovative mask were Robert & Patricia Justice in the adult category and Master Rafe in the children’s category. They received a bottle of wine and free ice creams. Very well done to the winners and to everyone that participated!

![]() |
- As I finish writing this blog, we are halfway through our half term week, which so far has been very busy indeed.
- Our Kid’s club has been running and the new table football, very popular as was the pool try-dives. Our pool party is coming up on Wednesday, but more about that next month.
- Lastly, after an extensive refurbishment, the hotel (which has been franchised from Hesperia), reopened on the 15th May and is now called the ‘Grand Hyatt La Manga Club Golf & Spa’. The good news is that LQC members and families will be offered a 20% discount at restaurants in the hotel.
- Having visited the website to compare prices, a 2-week, in a King room on a room-only basis for 2-people from 22nd July 2023, is a staggering €5155! This highlights just what a bargain La Quinta is, as the dues for a 2-bed villa, for the same 2-week period are only €2130. This brings home just what fantastic value LQC is and don’t forget the price includes not only villa use, but all the benefits of being a member of the club.
Events and Activities for June 2023
- This month is again set to be a very busy one, with high occupancy throughout.
- Here are a couple of dates for your diary for events happening at LQC.
- On Friday 2nd June from 11:30 - 14:00, ‘Heniam & Associates’ are holding a Whiskey & Wealth Club insight (with whiskey tasting and nibbles), afternoon at La Quinta. All are welcome but as numbers are limited, they ask that you RSVP to

An Insight into the Village of ‘El Algar’
-
El Algar is a municipality with a population of some 8,000 located in the eastern region of Cartagena, a mere 14Kms from La Quinta.
- It is comprised of 6 localities: El Algar itself, (population 5600), Las Lomas (1500), Los Urrutias 850), Estrella de Mar (300) and Los Rizor & Los Ruices with only 15 inhabitants between them.
- With the exception of a hill named Cabezo Álvarez, the area is relatively flat.
- There is evidence of early Roman presence, but the area was likely uninhabited during most of the latter Roman occupation.
- Throughout the Middle Ages, it was used as a herding route by shepherds who subsequently set up settlements there.
- During the second half on the 19th century, the landowners of El Algar benefited from the profits resulting from the areas mining boom and various notable properties were constructed including the Casa Rubio and the Circo Apolo theatre.
- The area then sadly declined after the end of the mining boom with many residents moving north to Catalonia.
- Today, the village is home to the ‘Zama Carriage Museum’, featuring a variety of carriages and old motorcycles and the Circo Apolo theatre.
- El Algar boasts its own football team, ‘Club Deportivo El Algar’ and has a women's volleyball team called ‘Surmenor’.
- The village also holds a small street market every Thursday.
- Several festivals take place throughout the year including the Patron Saint festival from 31st August -15th September. Activities during this period include a rock festival, parades, and a horseback race.

Chairmans Blog - Edition 12 May 2023
- Well, it is blog number 12, and I cannot believe it has been a full year since I first introduced them!
- April has been a really fantastic month, with hours of sunny weather and much higher than normal temperatures, which reached just under 40˚C in some parts of the region.
- Our high occupancy continues, and we were full for both Easter holiday weeks. In fact, we saw the highest occupancy at Easter in the club’s history.
- As a result, we held two pool parties, re-introduced scuba try dives and Bubblemaker courses with ‘Adventure Divers’ and hosted Monday night dinners. All these activities were well attended and supported by our members and guests, which were made even better by the fabulous weather.
- La Solana was also well patronised with guests thoroughly enjoying our wide selection of offerings.
- We have also purchased a new table football game, which has been sited in the kids play area, near to the table tennis table.

Here it is then, blog #12 with updates and information for the month of May about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. As always this is sent directly to your email inbox, but it is also accessible on our website www.laquintaclub.com Enjoy!
Meet the staff
This is one of my favourite items. It is very pleasing to be able to highlight and showcase to you, members of our La Quinta family. So, without further ado, please let me introduce this month Adriana Sottovia and Domingo Ros Diaz.
Adriana Sottovia
Usually, I write a bio for each member from information provided to Laura, but in this case, Adriana’s was so nice I am going to leave it (with the exception of some punctuation), exactly as she wrote it as it really sums up our great La Quinta family...
- “My name is Adriana, and I am 61 and live in Los Belones.”
- “You might know me as I have been at La Quinta for more than 30 years. I started cooking in villa 201 for the staff, which was a small family at that time!! The first Chairman Tony Coles and Sue Richards (General Manager) offered me a job to run the kitchen of La Solana and the time passed and I still continue trying to please our members.”
“Let me tell you that I arrived in Spain from Argentina in 1992, this country made me feel like at home and has given me such good things like great work partners, friends and many more things. I am very grateful.”
- “Life also gave me two daughters Rocio and Alba who are my greatest pride and treasure.”
- “I would like to tell you that I am an animal lover. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, and I love the beach, good food, sunsets and looking at the moon.”
- “I could write about a lot of good experiences and anecdotes that have happened at La Quinta over these years, but Mark would get tired of writing, ha, ha, ha. However, something that I would like to say is that I am very fortunate to belong to La Quinta team. Thank you.”
Domingo Ros Diaz
- Domingo Ros Diaz works in the maintenance department. He is 61 years old and was born in La Unión where he still currently resides.
- In 1986, when he was only 24 and working for Inmogolf, he was recruited by La Quinta due to his abilities and skills and offered a position of maintenance manager by James Caetano the first general manager at the club.
- He has now been working with us here at La Quinta for 37 years. He really enjoys his work, which he says has been fundamental to his life.
- Domingo plans to continue to work at the club until he eventually retires.
- He is married to Loli and has two wonderful daughters, Belén and Patricia whom as a father he feels very proud of.
- When asked how he has found working for La Quinta for so long he replied that he is enormously grateful, for both his work and for the colleagues he has worked alongside throughout the years. He considers LQC his second family.
- Domingo likes all types of sport and enjoys playing chess, cycling, hill walking and trekking.
Update on April events.
- Our annual AGM was held at La Quinta on Sunday 23rd. It was a hybrid meeting with members who could not physically attend being able to join us via Zoom.
- Although he was unable to be at the meeting due to family commitments, Ian Alsop stood down after serving for 10-years on the committee.
- I would like to personally thank Ian for his time, effort, loyalty, and dedicated service throughout his tenure.
We do have a new volunteer on the committee, James Brindle. I am sure you will join me in warmly welcoming him on board.
- The Gala Dinner held on Sunday evening after the AGM, was well attended, with one of our new singers - ‘Vanessa Soul,’ entertaining our members and guests. She, was very well received and the songs she performed thoroughly enjoyed.
- The General Community President’s meeting was held on the 26th in La Solana, the full minutes of which will be available on our website once they have been approved by the GC.
- At an EGM held just prior to the meeting, it was agreed by the majority that the GC could purchase a new state of the art road sweeper for the club as the existing one is constantly breaking down and needing costly repairs. This will come from GC funds and will have no direct financial impact on LQC.
- The independently produced ‘La Manga Life’ magazine was published on 24th April, containing a 5-page feature article, (that I was asked to write), about the history of La Solana and is accompanied by a full page La Quinta Club advertisement on page 3 of the publication.
- Copies will be available soon in all villas and in reception. However if you can’t wait to read it the online version can be viewed at https://pub.marq.com/15af676e-e711-4436-b610-e59ed5a4dc12/
- Commencing on Monday 24th April and running throughout May & June we are offering a special breakfast promotion, 4 x breakfasts for €40. So, if you are visiting soon, why not take advantage of this great deal? See our advert below.

Events for May 2023
- This month is set to be a busy one again, with high occupancy throughout.
- We will be hosting two great events during the month of May. I am sure that they will both be well supported, as they are booking up quickly.
- On Sunday 7th May we shall be holding a King Charles III, - ‘Coronation Street Party’ in and on the terraces of La Solana. Decorations will abound and party food will be offered including the ‘Coronation Quiche.’ Only €25 for adults and €15 for children, to include food and your first drink.
- We shall also be playing music from across the decades, with a song from each year since the King’s birth in November 1948.
- As the capacity is around a maximum of 100, early booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment. As I understand it, other than La Barra, we are the only venue on the club holding such an event.
![]() |
- Later in the month on 29th May, we shall be hosting a themed Monday night ‘La Quinta Masquerade Ball’ with Alex & Chloe providing the musical entertainment.
Feel free to dress to impress, but do not worry if you don’t have a mask, as both adult and children’s masks will be available to purchase from reception for a nominal fee.
There will however be a prize for the most innovative mask.

If you are planning to visit Murcia during your holiday, here are a couple of totally different things to do.
Ice Skating in Murcia?
- I bet this is something most of you wouldn’t think of to do in Spain, but the ‘Hielomania Ice Rink’ in Murcia is now open all year round!
- Located at the Thader Commercial Centre, Av. Juan de Borbón, it is open every day from 17:15-21:15 and from 12-noon-21:15 on Saturday
- A 30-minute session is a very reasonable €8.
- So, if it gets too hot, why not pop along to the ice rink to cool down?

Jardin de la Seda
- How about a relaxing visit to the ‘Jardin de la Seda,’ an enchanting public park tucked away in the heart of the Murcian city centre?
- Created back in 1990 on the site of what was an old silk factory, the park’s name ‘Seda’ (meaning silk), is derived from the old factory.
- Indeed, a chimney from the factory building still exists within the park itself, a reminder and symbol of its heritage.
- A visit to the ‘Jardin de la Seda’ allows you to explore a place full of beauty and charm. It has lakes, streams, and bridges (with lots of ducks and swans), plenty of viewpoints with picnic benches, rose gardensand a children's playground.
- There is also a delightful cafeteria built on a raised platform over one of the lakes serving hot & cold refreshments including sandwiches & tapas.
- The Jardin de la Seda can be found on Calle Senda de Enmedio, 30009 Murcia.
- See: La Seda Garden | All You Need In Murcia for further information.

Driving in Spain
As most of us now drive our own vehicle or hire a car when we are on holiday in Spain, I thought it would be useful to provide some basic Spanish driving information.
![]() |
General
- You must be 18-years old and hold a full licence issued in EU, UK, or EEA to drive in Spain (21-years old and licence held for 1-year, if hiring a car). An international permit is not required, although you may need one if your licence was issued in the IoM, Channel Islands or Gibraltar.
- A reflective jacket and warning triangle must be carried and headlamp beam deflectors and a UK sticker if travelling in a non-Spanish registered vehicle. Car rental companies usually provide these items and they can be fined if they do not.
- Driving in flip-flops, although not a specific offence, can result in a fine if you are wearing them at the time of an accident and the police consider that you doing so was contributory to the accident.
Speed cameras
- There are more and more speed cameras in operation throughout Spain, fixed, mobile, and sectional, so the chances of being caught are rising.
Fixed cameras
- According to DGT there are currently some 1400 fixed cameras throughout Spain. Usually installed on gantries adjacent to road information signs, they are intended more as a deterrent than for enforcement, to slow drivers down in high accident rate areas.
- Some of the newer cameras are also able to monitor seat belt and mobile phone use and operate in both directions.
- There are however warning signs advising of these cameras and a full list is available on the DGT website DGT - Home
Mobile cameras
- There are various types such as the VELOLASER ,which can be left unattended on a tripod or attached to a guardrail by the side of the carriageway.
- Mobile devices are also operated by the Guardia Civil, often from unmarked cars or vans and speeders are also monitored by helicopters using Pegasus equipment or via the use of drones.
- It is illegal in Spain to have a radar detection device in your vehicle.
Section Cameras
- These are essentially the same as average speed cameras in the UK calculating your average speed over a given distance or section.
Fines
- Speeding fines vary from €100-€600 and although a discount is offered for prompt payment to the Spanish no such facility is offered to foreign nationals. Normally if caught, you must pay the fine on-the-spot to the traffic officer. See below speeding fine chart.
![]() |
Seat Belts
- Wearing of seat belts is mandatory for all vehicle occupants in Spain and has been since 1992. Not wearing one is considered to be a serious offence and if caught, comes with a hefty €200 fine!
- As well as the driver, adult passengers will be subject to fines for not wearing seat belts.
- Foreign nationals will not receive points on their licence but will be required to pay an on-the-spot fine.
- In addition, a child under 135cms (4’ 6”), must sit in the rear of the vehicle unless there are more than 3-children already seated. Any child aged under 12 and less than 135cms must be seated in a child restraining system if in the front seat.
Parking
- It is prohibited, to park within 5-meters of a bend or junction.
- Vehicles must be parked on the RHS of the road unless in one-way street, where parking is permitted on either side.
- Illegally parked vehicles may be clamped or towed away. In the case of the latter, you will need to attend the nearest police station and pay a fine for both the towing and parking infringement to have the vehicle returned.
- Disabled parking (blue), badges are recognised in Spain but they must be clearly displayed and visible through the windscreen when parked.
Drinking & Driving
- The blood alcohol limit in Spain is 0.05%, which is lower than in the UK.
- Roadside drink and/or drug tests will be given to a driver suspected of; driving under the influence of drink or drugs, having committed a traffic offence or having been involved in an accident.
- Refusal to take such a test, may result in your vehicle being impounded and your licence being suspended for up to four-years.
Access to Calblanque regional park - 2023
- If you are intending to go to Calblanque beach, located near to Cabo de Palos during your stay, please note that from 7th April until 15th October 2023, access restrictions will apply.
- The main entrance will be staffed during these dates in order to protect the area.
- For the 63-days from April 7th vehicles will only be permitted access until the car park becomes full.
- For the remaining 55-days, access to the beach after 9:00am will be by coach only.
- The park opens from 8:00am-8:30pm daily but vehicles are prohibited after 8:30pm.
- For more information about Calblanque see: Playas de Calblanque : Official Murcia Region tourist site (turismoregiondemurcia.es)
Dish of the Month
Adrián’s Special Patatas Bravas
A novel and totally unique variation of the well-known Spanish dish, which are usually square potatoes in a spicy sauce of chilli & paprika.
Adrián’s version are small, boiled potatoes (in their skin), which are cut in half and fried with black garlic mayonnaise, red fruit marmalade and Thai chilli.
They are then sprinkled with peta-zetas, (popping candy) to give an incredible and unforgettable, culinary sensation. A must try!
