Chairman’s Blog - Season 3, Edition 6 (November 2024)

• A very warm welcome to the third ‘ber’ month - November, here in the region of Murcia where it’s hard to believe its actually autumn.

• There’s lots going on this month particularly in regards to sports, with two golf events (both of which we are sponsors of), and a tennis and cycling event. See below for further details of each individual activity.

• The month kicks off with us hosting our hugely popular ‘November Getaway’ week, starting on 2^nd November, which has been fully booked for some time. Indeed we are full up to the end of November into early December.

• We have a number of groups visiting us in November, including a long stay Swedish group who have booked 20 villas and are holding 10 separate events in La Solana!

• UPDATE: Further to my post last month regarding the EES (Entry and Exit System) & ETIAS (the Visa Waiver Scheme), this has now been delayed to sometime in 2025.

• Having recently been at La Quinta in October, I actually spoke to the border control officers at the airport and they said there is no exact date set for the rollout at this time. Please see future blogs for further updates.

Update of Events From October 2024

• Throughout most of the month the weather was beautiful with warm temperatures, lots of sunshine, stunningly blue skies and fantastic sunsets. A perfect month to visit!

• Monday night dinners continued to be well attended, but numbers could have been even better with more active support by members or residents staying at La Quinta.

• This is something that is somewhat disappointing, notwithstanding the fact that many members have asked us to consider keeping the bar open later or opening the restaurant on additional evenings.

• On the plus side, numbers have fortunately been well supplemented by guests from outside the Club, (which is an area we have been targeting through a raft of different advertising mediums), and it seems our efforts are beginning to bear fruit as numbers are growing.

• On Monday 14^th (whilst I was over for committee meetings), we hosted dinner for some 60 guests with an excellent 30% (22 guests), attending from outside the club but, for the first time ever it was interrupted by a flash thunderstorm (see photo below).

• We all rushed inside to avoid the short lived but biblical rain and sadly the band couldn’t play as their equipment was soaked, but we used our recently purchased Bluetooth speaker to provide some great music for our guests.

• The staff were really fantastic in assisting the mass exodus from the terrace and setting everything up inside, in record time. This precipitous hiatus may have dampened the ground outside, but it didn’t dampen our spirts or spoil the evening.

• For the first two weeks of October, for our Friday Sushi and Saxo days, we were delighted to showcase the talents of saxophonist Peari, who stood in for Alex. He was very well received by all with a full terrace of guests enjoying his musical repartee on the 11^th. Alex returned on the 18^th October.

• Both half term weeks were very busy as not only did we host an Aloha party on the 28^th but 2 x Halloween parties for the kids on the 24^th & 31^st. The Spooktacular🎃event on the 24^th and the Aloha party on the 28^th were well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all, as I am sure was the one on the 31^st.

 

  

Tipping La Quinta Staff

• I am often quizzed by members about the preferred method for tipping our staff, in recognition of the outstanding service that they all provide.

• Although I have highlighted this before, the easiest way is to leave cash in an envelope (provided at reception), with your villa number and name on it or just add it to your final bill when you check out.

• Obviously, the first option tends to be better as cash is always king! 

 

Fishermen Find a Navy Torpedo off the Coast of the Costa Blanca 

• Here’s something you don’t come across every day!!

• The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation after a group of fishermen discovered a Spanish Navy torpedo around four nautical miles off the coast of the island of Tabarca (Costa Blanca). 

• The mk46 American made torpedo may have gone astray during practice manoeuvres held on 8th October in the waters off Cartagena.

• Investigations are focused on discovering exactly where it came from and how the projectile reached the location where it was discovered.

• The anglers who found the device immediately alerted maritime authorities and the Guardia Civil, after towing it to safety to avoid a potential collision with other marine craft in the area.

• A Guardia Civil statement said there is no active notification for a missing mk46 torpedo, but confirmed it was of a type often used by Spanish Navy vessels and helicopters. They also said they believe that it may be an unarmed training projectile.

 

Airlines Predict a Bumper Winter Season for Spain

• The number of flight seats available to Spain between November 2024 and March 2025 is forecast to exceed 137 million, almost 12% more than last year.

• Forecasts by the Spanish association of airlines (ALA) are for a record winter season, as tourists change their travel plans from the Middle East to Spain due to widespread conflict in the region.

• Between April to September 2024 - 177 million passengers were recorded, almost 9% more than a year ago and could result in another record year after they were broken in 2023 with a total 283 million passengers flying throughout the year, according to ALA data.

 

Aquarium at La Manga Club

• A new venue is to open on Saturday 9^th November in the commercial unit next to the Curry Gardens Indian restaurant, opposite the football pitches.

• It will be a combined workspace for co-working, serving food and drinks and hosting a library with books in English & Spanish.

• There will also be charging points for mobile devices

Proposed Changes to the Drinking & Driving Alcohol Limits in Spain?

• A proposal to lower the maximum permitted alcohol levels for all drivers from 0.5 to 0.2 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood and from 0.25 grammes per litre of exhaled air to 0.1 is being considered.

• If the government agrees (which is highly likely), the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, will amend article 20 of the General Traffic Regulations, governing blood & breath alcohol limits.

• The proposal will mean Spain would mirror the levels of Norway and Sweden.

• In Norway, 21 people per million die in road traffic accidents and 22 in Sweden, while in Spain the figure stands considerably higher at 36, with almost 30% alcohol related.

• The proposal is to be introduced to “overcome the widespread idea in Spain that moderate consumption is acceptable and only excess is prohibited." It would also send out a "clear and forceful" message, in line with the DGT's (the Spainish traffic authority), campaigns that "the only safe rate is 0.0".

 

A Guide to Cycling in Spain

• As Spain becomes more cycle friendly, here are some dedicated traffic rules and requirements governing their use. They may seem obvious, but there are some differences to the cycling in the UK.

Lights:Between sunset and sunrise, you must have and use one white light pointing forward and one red one pointing rearwards.

Reflectors:Bikes must have at least a rear reflector. It’s also mandatory to wear reflective clothing - but only between sunset and sunrise, on inter-urban roads, in low visibility conditions, or in tunnels.

Brakes: A bike must have fully functioning front and rear braking systems.

Warning Bell: It’s mandatory for bikes to have a mounted bicycle bell. The application of a similar-sounding device is not equitable.

Helmet:  Wearing a bike helmet is mandatory outside urban areas (you can get arrested if you don’t!). Exceptions:

• when cycling within urban areas

• when cycling in extreme heat

• when riding up steep hills

• if you’re a professional cyclist.

General Cycling Rules

• Bikes must be ridden on the right-hand side of the roadway and never against the flow of traffic.

• If available, bike lanes or appropriately marked trails must be used. The speed limit is 30 km/h.

• Bikes must not be ridden on pavements, side-walks, public parks and other pedestrian areas, except at a speed of less than 10 km/h and when the following circumstances apply:

a) There are no separate lanes for cyclists.

b) The side-walk is 3m+ wide.

c) The side-walk is not crowded, (keeping at least 1m distance from pedestrians and being able to ride in a straight line for at least 5m).

• There are no signs or markings prohibiting bicycling.

• If cycling on the road, you have to stay on the right or middle lane (if available). The left lane is to be used only if there is no other option due to the circumstances of the road, or to turn left.

• When riding on bike paths, particular caution must be paid in sections, which are shared with pedestrians or other road users, e.g. pedestrian crossings.

• It is forbidden to ride on bus lanes, which are only intended for public transport vehicles.

• Cycling in public parks, promenades and other central pedestrian areas is permitted, provided that the priority of pedestrians is considered, and a speed limit of 10 km/h is adhered to.

• When cycling close to buildings, keep a 5m+ distance from the building line.

• The use of mobile phones or similar handheld devices which affect your attention is not permitted.

• The use of headphones or earbuds is also not permitted.

• Unauthorized races or similar competitions are prohibited.

• Both hands must be kept on the handlebars whilst riding.

• Riding with a blood/alcohol level exceeding 0.5 grams /litre in blood (0.25 milligrams / litre exhaled) is prohibited. Doing so carries a fine of up to €500.

• Bikes should preferably be parked in designated parking places, leaving a clear passage of 3+m in width for pedestrians to pass. It is expressly forbidden to attach bicycles to trees, traffic lights, benches, waste bins, etc.

 

Hand Signals:Hand signals must be used to communicate your intent to other drivers/riders.

Stopping:  Extend the left arm out to the left, point vertically downward and wave the extended arm up and down.

Turning Right:Extend the right arm perpendicularly to the body.

Turning Left:Extend the left arm perpendicularly to the body.

• Following on from the regulations for cycling above, E-Scooters, are also becoming more and more popular with both residents and holidaymakers, so please see the poster below showing a brief overview of the rules and regulations for their use.

 

Getting to Know the Autonomous Regions of Spain

• Did you know that Spain is divided up into 17 different areas, which are known as Autonomous Regions?

• They have high levels of power and self-governance and are similar to a devolved nation like Scotland in the UK.

• Each region has its own unique characteristics, including heritage buildings and cities, fiestas and traditions, local cuisine, and contrasting landscapes. Many regions also have their own official language or a different dialect of Spanish, their own culture, and unique history.

Events & Activities Taking Place in November 2024

Gravel Festival - Cabo de Palos 2^nd - 3^rd November 2024

• The season finale of the 2024 IG (Iron Gravel) tour is being held in Cabo de Palos.

• It is a non competitive cycling event, combining sport, nature & fun, great for both participants and spectators alike.

• There are two routes of 50 kms & 80 kms held on Saturday and Sunday, much of which is through the area of the Calblanche national park.

• In addition to the cycling, there is also SUP, Kayaking and snorkelling to participate in with music throughout the day and a night party too!

Costa Calida Crusiers Motorcycle Club - 8^th Annual Rideout - 3^rd November 2024

• Something for all you motorcycle enthusiasts.

• The CCCM club are having an annual memorial motorcycle rideout, from 11:30-14:00 on Sunday 3^rd November.

• The route starts in Mazarron, passes through Cabo de Palos, returning to Buenavista for food, drinks, raffles and live music with Los Duques.

Farmfoods Senior Masters Golf 7^th - 10^th November 2024

• Calling all golf fans, this one’s not to be missed!

• Over 4-days (7^th to the 10^th November), the Farmfoods Senior Masters Golf competition will be held at La Manga, offering the opportunity for amateurs to play alongside professionals.

• Champions (UK) PLC, the event promoters are hosting it for the third year here and it is the second year that La Quinta have been a sponsor.

• Its growing popularity has increased prize money to €375,000 this year and as such is attracting a raft of stars such as last years winner Patrick Sjoland, previous competitors; Peter Baker, Ian Woosnam OBE, Paul Lawrie OBE, Michael Campbell, Michael Jonzon, Thomas Levet and newcomers such as Spaniard Carlos Balmaseda.

Cartagena Medieval Market 8^th - 10^th November 2024

• Not to be missed, the fabulous Medieval Market of Cartagena, will take place this year from the 8^th to the 10^th of November in a pedestrianised area of the old town.

• The three day event will be open each day from 10am until 11pm.

• Recreating the feel of 13^th century medieval times, the market has over 100 art and craft stalls selling all manner of goods including food, drink, jewellery, silverware and leather goods to name but a few.

• In addition there is street entertainment, music, dancing and fun for all.

The La Manga Club Owners Golf Tournament 25th-29th November 2024

• Another great tournament for all you fans of golf.

• This five day event is one of two held at La Manga club each year, culminating with a gala dinner and prize giving at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

• I am pleased to announce that La Quinta are one of the sponsors of both this event and the one that took place in May.

ITF - World Tennis Master Tour (MT700) - 25^th - 30^th November 2024

• The ITF World Masters Tennis Tour will be hosted again this year by the Racquets Club at La Manga Club.

• So why not go along and watch a week’s worth of top-tier tennis?

• Although numerous stars from the world of tennis will be taking part the full list of competitors was still awaited at the time of publication.

 

 

A Spectacular Hidden Oasis in the Abanilla Desert. 

• With an incredible geological and botanical landscape the Chícamo River route in Abanilla is a place of great natural beauty.

• A tranquil paradise, with stunning rock formations, canyons, an old mill, and trickling streams.

• The route can be accessed from the Abanilla road near Macisvenda MU 410 towards the village of Chícamo before crossing the river, and arriving at the esplanade-viewpoint.

• Parking is available here, which is the start and end point of the 6km route.

 

The Horadada Cave - Yecla. 

• The famous and unique Cueva de la Horadada stands out for its huge hole in its upper section, created by water erosion on the rock, through the ceiling of the cave.

• Over the years, wind erosion has also carved holes into the walls inside, creating a honeycomb effect. 

• This cave is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the Murcia Region, as it is a circular route and of low difficulty for visitors, taking about one and a half hours to complete.

• Suitable for all, including families with children and dogs the route can be undertaken independently, or as part of a guided tour, bookable via the Yecla Tourist Office (+34 968 754 104), which will include a visit to the local cave paintings and a number of different archaeological points of interest.

Visit the Pretty Town of Cehegín

• Cehegín is located in the heart of the north-western area of the Murcian Region.

• Prehistoric, Iberian, Roman, Arab and Christian settlers have left their legacy on these beautiful and natural landscapes.

• Its famous medieval quarter owes its charm to the Arab settlements in the upper part of the town, and has a number of stately homes, churches, convents, and palaces.

• In addition to its historical and cultural town, Cehegín has delightful surroundings to see, such as the valley viewable from the Plaza de la Constitución, the Argos Reservoir, the view from the Casino and the meandering old streets, and the wine museum.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 3, Edition 5 (October 2024)

• Welcome to October, the second of the four ‘ber’ months of 2024 and part of La Quinta’s green season!

• It is hard to believe that we are three quarters of the way through the year already and fast approaching autumn.

• Fear not though, as October is a fabulous month here in Spain with nice warm days but slightly cooler mornings and evenings. Average daily highs are around 25°C and lows around16°C.

• An ideal month for getting out and about or partaking in the variety of sports that La Manga Club has to offer, particularly padel tennis, which has become very popular (see article below).

• We are fully booked out for all of the month with the half-term weeks for schools across England, Scotland and Ireland set to be particularly busy during the second half of October.

• Throughout the month we continue to offer Monday night dinner’s, with a variety of different artists, Alex our resident Saxophonist by the pool (although the latter is now on Friday not Wednesday combining with our Sushi Friday’s), and our Chef Adrián’s weekend specials.

• So please do come along to these events, enjoy and support your club.

Update of Events From September 2024

• September was again a busy month, with full occupancy and with La Solana being well patronised for breakfast’s and at lunchtime.

• Guests enjoyed all of the varied entertainment we provided throughout the month particularly the last of our themed Monday nights.

• We had excellent turn-outs for the Aloha & White parties on both the 9^th September and the 16^th with 80 & 91 persons attending respectively (18 & 27 guests from outside the club). This is encouraging as our advertising & promotions campaigns appear to be working.

• The combining of Alex, our Saxophonist & Sushi on Fridays has also been very successful, again with more and more outside guests attending.

 

Padel Tennis, What’s all the Hype About?

What is Padel Tennis?

• Padel (Padel Tennis), is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.

• Although most people think Padel is quite new, it actually originated in the Mexican beach resort of Acapulco in 1969.

• Originally played by the Mexican elite until it began to be promoted in Spain, who today are the sport’s leaders, with more than 20,000 Padel courts and some four million active players.

• Similar to tennis and squash, it combines action with social interaction and fun.

• Padel is played in doubles on an enclosed court made of glass and mesh, which is a third of the size of a full-size tennis court, (10×20 meters).

• It’s an ideal game for all ages and abilities, as points are won by strategy more than by sheer strength and power.  

• The game is easy to learn, making it ideal for families as it can be played with mixed skill levels.

How to Play Padel

• Padel, is played in doubles.

• Padel, uses the same scoring system as tennis.

• Each point is started with an underarm serve. The server first bounces the ball then hits it below waist level.

• The server has two serve attempts.

• Just as in tennis, the ball may only bounce once on your side of the court, and it may only be hit once.

• Once the ball is in play, all balls which cross the net must first bounce on the ground on the opponent’s side before hitting a wall.

• It’s allowed to return the ball by first hitting it in a glass wall on your side of the court.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ!!

Explaining EES - Entry and Exit System & ETIAS - The Visa Waiver Scheme

• ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, is due to launch in mid 2025, and is a visa waiver scheme for Non EU nationals visiting countries in the Schengen area, including Spain.

 Stage One - EES - 10th November 2024

• EES (Entry and Exit System), is scheduled to commence at all Schengen borders, including Spain from November 2024.

• Designed to replace the current stamping of passports by registering a person's information - including name, travel document type and biometric information, such as fingerprints and facial images.

• The EES will also record if a traveller has been refused entry before or has overstayed in the Schengen area.

 Stage Two - ETIAS - May 2025

Cost and Validity

• Application for the ETIAS will cost €7 and will give holders the right to visit all countries in the Schengen area during that period. 

• It will be attached to an individuals passport and will be valid for three years or until the passport expires, (if earlier). It will allow the holder to stay in countries of the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any rolling 180day period.

• If you are under 18 or over 70, the ETIAS will be free of charge.

No Passport Stamps Required

• Once the system is up and running, it will be entirely electronic, with E-Gates scanning passports and cross checking to ensure an ETIAS is in place, thus speeding up entry.

ETIAS Required information

• Personal information including your name(s), surname, date and place of birth, nationality, home address, parents' first names, email address and phone number.

• Passport information.

• Details about your education and occupation.

• Details about any criminal convictions and previous travel to war /conflicted zones and any deportation decisions.

• Application for ETIAS travel authorisation should be made prior to booking travel with the majority of applications approved within 96 hours of submission.

• Some applicants may be requested to hold an interview with the authorities, which could take up to 30 days.

• The ETIAS will not be required for third country nationals who live in EU Countries already.

Why is this being put in place?

• To speed up entry to Schengen countries and to improve the security of EU member states within the Schengen region by capturing data on travellers that currently visit the area without a visa.

• The ETIAS will pre-screen travellers from ‘third-countries’, who are citizens from countries not needing a Schengen Visa.

• The screening relates to terrorism or migration related risks.

• The objective is to identify individuals who pose security threats before they are able to travel to the Schengen area.

• It will also help to ensure visitors do not overstay their 90 days in any rolling 180 days within the zone.

• It's very similar to the ESTA scheme that has been in place for visitors to The United States for many years, and the UK are also implementing a similar scheme which will be called ETA.

 Calblanque Voted Second Best Beach in the World!

• In a recent survey conducted by the Daily Telegraph newspaper into the 50 greatest beaches in the world, our very own Calblanque was voted the 2^nd best!

• This is great news for the region, but let’s keep it to ourselves as we don’t want everyone discovering our secret!

• This is what The Telegraph said about the beach:

• “Secret coves, sand dunes and cliffs that stand out against infinite skies. Mountain massifs, coastal trails, white salt lakes and mustard sands, one of the best-preserved, unspoilt landscapes on Spain's south-east coast. This beach – one of many along this coastline – is the epitome of perfection, with soft, sink-into sands and a thousand shades of blue, warm waters that rarely rise in fury”.

• “The beach is part of the protected Regional Park of Calblanque. Keep a look out for Bonelli's eagles in the early morning, and eagle owls late at night’”. 

 

  Sun or Shade? How to get the Seats You Want on the Plane!

• Here is a really useful website, which lets you know which side of the plane the sun will be shining on during your flight.

• Before you book your seats on the aeroplane visit: https://sunflight.org/ and enter the flight route, date details etc and off you go.

• It will tell which side of the aircraft will be in the sun during your flight.

• By visiting this site you no longer need to be uncomfortably hot or have sun in your eyes on your flight.

 

A Guide to Discovering the Best Caves in the Region of Murcia.

Cueva del Puerto - Paraje de la Cueva del Puerto 30420 Calasparra

• With a 700-meter-long route and special illuminations and acoustics, you are able to observe different caves and galleries formed by various speleothems and see spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites of great diversity and colour.

• In the Gaudí Room, (one of the most outstanding caves), there are areas of incomparable beauty.

• A tour of approximately one hour and ten minutes, provides access to the ‘Luminous Minerals Room’, with a display of around 1500 minerals from around the world, a unique resource within Europe in a Hydrothermal Cave.

Santuario Romano Cueva Negra - Paraje de la Cueva Negra 30620 Fortuna

• The archaeological site of Cueva Negra is located about 3 km away from Fortuna in the Sierra del Baño.

• It is an impressive set of three rocks shelters of outstanding scenic interest and was a pagan sanctuary.

• An important number of Latin text’s with painted inscriptions called "tituli picti" can also be found inside - the oldest fragments of Virgil's Aeneid among them.

The Cave of The Serreta - Plaza de España 30530 Cieza

• The cave is located on the left bank of the Segura river, on the edge of the karst canyon of Los Almádenes.

• A large opening provides access to the interior of the gorge allowing natural lighting into the cave and highlighting the paintings as well as the original habitable area of ​​the cave.

• In total 50 wall figures can be viewed, which are divided into two rock face areas and are classed as ‘Schematic Rock Art’ with figures painted in the semi-naturalist style.

Sima de la Higuera - Calle Federico Balart 1, 30176 Pliego

• The Sima de la Higuera (Cave of the Fig Tree), is in the municipality of Pliego and is the largest cave system known in the Region of Murcia.

• At more than 5,500 meters long, it features some very special characteristics due to its ‘hypo-genic’ (formed in the interior of the earth), nature.

• Its entrance is located in Monte del Cabezo y Cuesta de Aledo, at an elevation of 485 meters, next to a fig tree, after which it is named.
  The cave has unique speleothems (types of formations in the cavity due to mineral deposits, such as stalactites and stalagmites), as well as a whole series of ‘hypo-genic’ cavities of hydrothermal origin, which are among the best in Europe.

La Manga Club’s - North v South Annual Golf Tournament 4^th October 2024

• Although the date for entry to this competition closed a while ago you can still come along and watch this annual competition which starts at 10:30am on Friday 4^th October.

Fun Dog Show/Fund Raiser for PAPS - Los Alcázares - 6^th October 2024

• PAPS (Protectora Animales Perros Del Sol), are a charity caring for and re-homing abandoned dogs in the area.

• They are holding a fun dog-show/fund raising event at Zona Terraza, Calle Penelope 10, on 6^th October starting at 10am.

• So why not go along and see the show and support this good cause?

• It’s an all day event with various competitions, craft stalls, raffles and music in the evening featuring Liz Monroe.

Murder Mystery Night at the Owners Clubhouse - 19^th October 2024

• Something different to try whilst on holiday?

• The Owners Club House are hosting a murder-mystery night on the 19^th of October.

• It is an interactive experience led by a UK theatre company.

FarmFoods Senior Master Golf 7^th - 10^th November 2024

• Although the 3rd FarmFoods Senior Masters golf competition (to be held at La Manga Club), does not start until the 7th November, here is an early heads up about the event.

• A recent announcement by organiser Champions PLC (UK) has highlighted that the prize money for the event has been increased to €375K.

• There will be many well known names taking part including; Peter Baker, Ian Woosnam, Michael Jonzon, and previous winners Paul Lawrie and Patrik Sjöland 

• La Quinta shall again be a sponsor and will be advertising throughout the event.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 3, Edition 4 (September 2024)

• What a fabulous summer we have had here at La Quinta, as we move into late summer and one of the best months – September.

• After the really hot weather in July, the month of August had perfect weather throughout the month with daily temperatures of around 29-30°C (85°F), with less humidity than normal.

• Our new format Monday nights and pool parties have been a great success, not so our trial Italian nights though.

• So things quieten down a tad this month as the children go back to school, but summer is far from over with perfect holiday weather still prevailing.

• Indeed we continue with our Monday night events throughout the month, but will be combing Wednesday's pool parties with Sushi Fridays going forward. Music by the pool with both Tapas and Sushi available from 4pm to 6pm on Friday's.

Meet the New La Quinta Babies

• As I am running low on remaining staff members, this month I thought I’d feature meet the La Quinta babies, as in the last month or so we have had two new additions to our La Quinta family.

• On 19th July Priya, gave birth to a bouncing baby girl who has been called Pravya.

• Then on 12th August, Isaac, from maintenance became the proud father of a baby boy

• They have named him Andres!

• I am sure you will join me in congratulating them both. 

 

Update on August Events

• August was a busy month and fortunately saw the end of the temporary fly problem that manifested itself during the last two weeks of July.

• Apparently, local farmers had failed to properly remove rotting melons from the fields in and around the area.

• This led to lots of flies all over La Manga and surrounding towns and villages.

• The GC lobbied the Cartagena Town Hall who apparently imposed fines and sanctions on the farmers, and they subsequently removed the melons and ploughed the fields.

• This issue impacted the bars and restaurants all over the Club including La Quinta as overall July was a quieter month in La Solana than usual.

• On a lighter note, La Quinta broke a record at our White Party on Monday 5th August, when we catered for an amazing 140 guests. The highest ever attendance prior to this was 132. Music was provided by Vanessa Lexi who was brilliant!

• A huge well done to all the staff, who worked extremely hard to deliver a seamless evening that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

• My family and I were delighted to have been part of this fantastic and memorable evening!

• The additional good news was that we had 20+ non members from outside La Quinta who booked too.

 

• The Aloha party held on 12th August was also a huge success with 105 attendees. There was great live music provided by Conecta2 with our very own Alvaro joining in to sing with the band.

• We continued to attract outside guests as at the white party on the 19th we had 15 guests join us from outside the club and at the Aloha party on the 26th we had 10 outside guests.

• After deciding to trial three additional nights this summer then having to cancel the Italian night in July, we did host one on Friday 9th which I attended, and I have to say, the food was delicious and plentiful. Sadly we again had to cancel the third one on the 23th August. It is very disappointing that although members have asked that we open more in the evenings, they chose not to support these nights. As a result we do not intend to offer them again in the future.

• All the pool parties were well attended throughout the month particularly on the 21st August, with ever popular Alex doing his thing on the Saxophone by the pool.

• After a 2-year hiatus we were accompanied on holiday this year by my father-in-law and former chairman, Michael Parkes, who is in his 90th year. We hosted a surprise party for him with over 40 current & former members of staff, friends and family in attendance.
• This included Enrique and his wife Manoli, Ana De Vial, Fina & her husband Bruno and our first chairman Tony Coles.

• It was a truly fabulous evening and a total surprise to Michael. Thanks to all those that attended and helped make it a really special night, and to all the staff who catered it. The food was wonderful.

• So don’t forget, if you have a special event you want to celebrate please consider holding in La Solana.

New Signage Around La Manga Club

• The new signs have been installed around the Club replacing the original ones.

• They are of a contemporary design and are back-lit at night.

• They look very smart!

 

Increased Popularity in Tourism for the The Region of Murcia

• Good news for Spanish tourism.

• The Region of Murcia is fast becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain, particularly among European travellers.

• According to the Jet-cost hotel and flight search engine, for August 2024 searches for flights to Spain increased by 12% with hotel searches rising by 14% compared to 2023.

• Murcia has become an increasingly attractive destination, particularly for tourists from the UK, Netherlands, Italy and Portugal ranking in the top 20 most searched for destinations.

• For the Spanish themselves, Murcia ranks 29th in the most sought after destinations in Spain.

Important: The European Union Introduces Changes for Flying

• From 1st September, the EU will be introducing changes to hand luggage regulations as part of a plan to standardise the dimensions of carry-on bags.

• At the same time, the rules for carrying liquids on planes will revert to a universal standard.

• Previously airlines have been able to set their own rules regarding hand luggage measurements, which has led to confusion regarding allowed weight and the size of carry-ons, often catching out even the most experienced travellers.

• The new regulations below will seek to standardised baggage sizes and weights across all European carriers.

• Weight allowed: No more than 10kg.

• Cabin allowance: 1 cabin bag & 1 small personal item such as a handbag, backpack, or laptop bag that must fit under the seat in front of you.

• Maximum dimensions: including handles and wheels, are set to be 55 x 40 x 20cm, and the personal item should be 40 x 30 x 15cm.

• From September 1st onward, the familiar 100ml rule for liquids will be reinstated for all passengers.

• The EU has said that uniformity is necessary, but further adjustments could be made in the future as airport security technologies continue to evolve.

• The new changes should hopefully make life a lot simpler and less frustrating for travellers.

Crazy Run - Bolnuevo Beach - Mazzaron 8th September 2024

• Come and watch (or participate), in the Crazy Run obstacle course, taking place from 9am on the 8th September on Playa de Bolnuevo, Avenida Pedro López Meca near Mazzaron.

• It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels

• Held over 5K it consists of 27 obstacles, including climbing, crawling and jumping, on a course designed to challenge your skills and endurance.

Murcia Fair 5th-17th September 2024

• The Murcia Fair offers a wide array of festive events and activities at a range of venues throughout the city in September and take place in areas such as the Huertos del Malecón fairground and in the Plaza Romea square.

• There are a multitude of amusements, a cattle fair, a pilgrimage, and a Festival of Moors and Christians (see below).

• There is also a large Funfair held at the FICA venue, which spans 40,000 square metres and will feature nearly 150 attractions, including rides, food stalls, and live performances.

 

Moors & Christians Festivities - Murcia 7th-14th September 2024

• Part of the Murcia Fair these festivities have become increasing popular and have been held in Murcia since 1983. They are one of the most genuine and traditional events in Spain.

• Hailing from the year 1452, they celebrate the time when the Christian troops of Murcia defeated the Muslim army of Granada on San Patricio (Saint Patrick’s) day. This is also the reason why he is the Patron Saint of Murcia.

• The Moors and Christian’s camp is based at the Malecón gardens with many events taking place in the Medieval Encampment in San Esteban gardens.

• Throughout the week the city streets are full of colour and mock battles, recreating the period of the Reconquest with the main events take place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday prior to the Pilgrimage Festival.

Carthaginians and Romans Festivals, Cartagena - 20th - 29th September 2024

• I have featured this in previous blogs as the festivities are held every September, but it is something well worth seeing.

• Taking place in Cartagena, these fiestas held over 10-days, from 20th-29th September to commemorate the taking of the city, in the year 209 AD by the Roman troops of Escipión.

• Throughout the month, individual days are dedicated to one side or the other, with a huge parade celebrating the marriage of Hannibal and Himilce (the day of the Roman Circus), with its gladiators and wild beasts, taking place on Saturday.

• It is the most important day of all the festivities, with the troops and legions marching through the city.

MABS Cancer Support Charity Picnic - Los Narejos 22nd September 2024

• The MABS Cancer Support Foundation is holding a ‘Picnic in the Park’ charity event on Sunday, 22nd September at La Zona in Los Narejos (Los Alcázares).

• Raising funds and awareness for this important charity, the event runs from 3 pm to 9 pm and promises to be an enjoyable and social afternoon with live music from; Jesus Hernandez, Rachel Prescott, Sean Holsgrove, Laly Blu, and Fab File.

• You can bring your own food, although food will be available. No drinks are allowed but again they will be available at the venue.

• A festival of concerts called Visorfest is being held over two days on Friday 27th & Saturday 28th September.

Charity Art Sale Event - Owners Clubhouse 28th September 2024

Chairman’s Blog - Season 3, Edition 3 (August 2024)

• Well, July has flown by as we head into the busiest month of the year - August with the holiday season now really in full swing!

• July was a scorcher of a month and August is set to follow suit.

• As you will know it has been the opposite at home with lower than average temperatures, rain and mostly grey skies. There was lots of rain over the Silverstone weekend, but it did remain dry enough to complete Wimbledon without any major delays though.

• Sadly it’s wasn’t to be for England who lost 2:1 to Spain in the Euro’s final. Congratulations to them and commiserations to us.

Meet the Staff

• I am now down to the last few members of staff that are left to tell you about. It has been suggested that I feature some of our La Quinta members and their families.

• But for this month’s meet the staff I am pleased to introduce Vladi, one of two of our newest members of kitchen staff who have recently joined our team from the Cartagena school of Hospitality.

 

VOLODYMYR SOROKHAN (Vladi)

Vladi has only been with us for a couple of months, so please do say hi if you see him.

• He is 19 years old and was actually born in the city of Ternopil in Ukraine

• Vladi moved to Spain 12-years ago and currently lives in Cartagena, with his mother who is a caretaker and her partner.

• He is an only child, is currently single and as well as working in La Solana is studying at the Hostelry School in Cartagena.

• He has a passion for cooking and it was his teacher (who knows our head chef Adrián well), recommended Vladi to him and as such he was offered employment in our kitchens.

• Vladi’s hobbies include watching and playing football. He supports Barcelona.

 

Update on July Events

• We had a busy July, hosting our pool parties with our saxophonist Alex and our (new for this season), themed ‘All White nights’ and ‘Hawaiian Aloha’ Monday night dinners.

• They have been enjoyed by all, with guests dressing up in white or Hawaiian clothes and live music being provided by a selection of different entertainers. Here are the event posters with dates and performing artists for the summer.

 

• Please check the events calendar on our website so that you can see who will be playing and so you can bring the appropriate attire out for these events.

• On the evening of the 14th July, we stayed open late to show the Euro final live in La Solana. 70+ people packed out the clubhouse to support their teams.

 

• We were also due to hold our first additional evening event on Friday 27^th - an Italian night, with music and dancing. However this was cancelled due to a lack of bookings and was very dissapointing notwithstanding that members have asked us to do more in the evenings and we are striving to deliver. We spent a lot of effort advertising and promoting the night but it was not supported. There are two more evenings scheduled for August, which I hope we will be able to go host. It’s up to you people! 

• Occupancy has been high throughout the month with La Solana being well patronised daily. For some reason the last part of July was much quieter than normal, which has been reflected across the resort and may account for the lack of support for our proposed Italian night!

• We again provided the venue in La Solana for the LMC St Teresa’s Church, to hold their Sunday service on 21^st July.

• I was out for a flying 3-day visit in mid July for an GC EGM and a presidents and committee meeting. It was fabulous to catch up with you all and to see so many guests dressed in loud shirts and flowery dresses at the Monday night Aloha party!

 

• ********Breaking news*******….an exciting announcement….we have a new addition to our La Quinta family!

• Huge congratulations to Priya from the La Solana team who gave birth to a bouncing baby girl on Friday 19^th of July. She has been named Pravia. Mother, baby and proud father Vikas, are all doing well.

 

La Manga Club Events & Activities 2024 

• There are a number of events and activities being held in Bellaluz Square during the summer.

• These include a variety of music, flamenco and fashion shows on Wednesdays and Fridays and a free kids (4-12 years), summer workshop from 6:30pm – 8:30pm on selected dates.

• The Owners Clubhouse have also published a number of events that are scheduled to take place throughout the year.

 

Hollywood Comes to the Region of MurciA

• The British film company - Stage Fifty in partnership with Universal are planning to construct the largest film/TV studio in Europe.

• At a cost of over €120 million, the studio will be some 100,000m² in size.

• It will be located in the Los Cármenes de Los Torres industrial estate and will deliver both national and international productions.

• More good news is that it should generate thousands of jobs in the area.

 

Ferry Service Between La Manga & Santiago de La Ribera Resumes

• As of July the suspended ferry service connecting La Manga Del Mar Menor and the mainland recommenced.

• Offering 4 x daily services each way, it will operate all year round.

• The cost is €6 for adults (free for children under4-years old).

 

Events & Activities for August 2024

 See U2 & Dire Straits Tribute Bands - 9^th August 2024

• On Friday 9th August at 9:30pm two of the regions best tribute bands will be performing at the Pista Fairgrounds Auditorium in Los Alcázares,

• Mar Menor Music Legends: Brothers in Band, the acclaimed tribute to Dire Straits and Please U2 will be providing the musical nostalgia for all lovers of classic rock.

• An unforgettable night filled with music, memories, and the excitement of live rock music.

• More than 5 hours entertainment with DJs, bar service, food trucks, merchandising and much more.

The ‘Sal de Música Fest 2024’ 9th-14th August 2024

• The ‘Sal de Música Fest 2024’ celebrates its third year from 9^th-14^th August, 2024 at the San Pedro del Pinatar Fairgrounds on Calle Alcalde José María Tárraga surrounded by the beautiful Salinas landscape.

• This festival brings together a variety of guest artists playing different musical genres such as pop, reggaeton, R&B and traditional Spanish. There will also be an expanded food and leisure area this year with the aim of offering the public a unique experience including DJ sessions after the concerts.

Experience a Cuban Night in Portman - 17^th August 2024.

• The Cantina de la liga de Portman are hosting some events in August including a Cuban night with a live Cuban band on the 17^th August.

• So why not wander down and check out some authentic food and entertainment?

 

The Altiplano – Rural Murcia

• Have you explored the Altiplano in the north of the Region of Murcia? There's really no excuse not to, and you could be missing out on so much!

• The Altiplano (the high plateau), is home to the two municipalities of Jumilla and Yecla.

• A large area with big skies, vast plains, mountains and vineyards with Jumilla  occupying an area of almost 1,000 square kilometres and Yecla over 600 km².

• A must do when visiting the Altiplano has to be to visit the wineries and sample the wine.

• Other things to see and do are to visit to the magical mountain of Monte Arabí in Yecla, the Monastery and Sierra of Santa Ana in Jumilla, the various Hilltop castles and sanctuaries and monumental churches.

El Humedal Del Mar Menor

• Did you know that the Mar Menor has its own Wetlands located just south of San Pedro del Pinatar?

• Classified as a wetland of International Importance it has high environmental and landscape values.

• The Wetlands are home to a variety of aquatic bird populations in particular four species; the Himantopus himantopus (Stork), Recurvirostra avosetta (Avocet), Charadrius alexandrinus (Black-coloured Plover) and Sterna albifrons (Little Tern).

• It is of the utmost importance that these wetlands are protected if the Mar Menor is to remain the home to these thousands of species of birds.

 

Paddle Boarding at Cabo de Palos

• Fancy learning how to Paddle Board or SUP as it’s called in Spain?

• Every afternoon from Monday to Thursday @supcabodepalos will be offering 2-hour routes in and around Cabo de Palos.

Fancy Going on a Jet Ski Tour?

• Departing from Puerto Tomàs Maestre, Kalima Charter offer a variety of guided tours in the area.

The Village of Ojós & its Hanging Bridges!

• About an hours drive away from La Manga and hidden away in one of the most beautiful valleys in the Murcia region (the Valle del Ricote), is the small town of Ojós.

• With barely 500 inhabitants it oozes charm and has a great agricultural tradition, but today lends itself more to tourism, thanks to its exciting hiking route.

• The area has over 5km of picturesque pathways, passing over magnificent suspension bridges and along riverside forests.

• You can even bathe in the fresh waters during the summer months.

• Having opened in September 1986 La Quinta is approaching its 40^th year, hard to believe!

• Although we still have many founder and long term members who remember La Quinta as it was back in the day, we also have many newer members who may not.

• Over the years the La Quinta has changed, been improved and updated but its fundamental club ethos has remained unchanged.
