And just like that, summer is upon us. Sadly something we can’t say about the awful weather that we have experienced in the UK!!
-
Even more reason to book your holiday or extra holiday here at La Quinta as we commence with the school holidays and our busiest two months of the year.
-
As well as fantastic weather, there is so much to do here in July and August on the Costa Calida.
-
We continue to be busy with high occupancy and for breakfasts and lunches in the bar/restaurant catering for members and non-members alike.
-
The Pool party with Alex our resident saxophonist remains very popular and shall continue through the summer as will our Monday dinners with a variety of acts and some themed nights planned.
-
Our Sushi Fridays are back and we have introduced an additional specialised menu on Saturdays & Sundays, so please do check out our wonderful offerings.
-
I know that you are looking forward to your holiday as much as we are at having you stay with us and I wish you all a great #Summer of Fun 2024 here at La Quinta.
-
We are off then with Season 3 blog #2, summer edition, with updates and information for the month of July, about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. Meet the Staff
There are now only 3-4 staff members of staff left to feature, so once again, I am looking at an alternative to fill the void. If there is anything else you would like me to include in future editions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at chairman@laquintaclub.com
But for this month’s meet the staff I am pleased to introduce María Jesús, one of two of our newest members of kitchen staff who have recently joined our team from the Cartagena school of Hospitality.
María Jesús
-
María known as Chus to her friends is 58-years old and was born on the 8th June in Cartagena. -
When she was 12 her family moved to Madrid, where she then lived for 20-years.
-
María studied law in Madrid and worked as a lawyer for 3-years but didn’t really enjoy it.
-
Having married a man from Cartagena, she moved back to the area where she has lived for the last 25-years.
-
She developed and ran a business - a children's birthday party park for many years but due to family circumstances had to close it.
-
Because of her love of cooking she enrolled in the Cartagena School of Hospitality studying for a two-year Intermediate Degree in Cooking and Gastronomy.
-
She was offered the opportunity to join the kitchen staff at La Solana, after our head chef Adrián approached the school director for staff and didn’t hesitate in saying yes to the offer.
-
María says she is learning so much under Adrián’s tutorage and is enjoying the wonderful atmosphere at La Quinta.
-
She has 3 x university-aged children, each studying in different parts of Spain.
-
Her hobbies are, reading, going out with friends, attending the theatre and going to the cinema.
Update on June Events
-
After the first pool party of the season held during May half term we continued with Alex our resident saxophonist on Fridays throughout June with the pool parties returning to their usual Wednesday slot from the beginning of July.
-
Alex is extremely popular and really well received and we have had a fair few non La Quinta guests who have attended for drinks and to listen to him play.
-
Hot weather prevailed throughout June with the exception of 3-4 stormy days and downpours in the second week which brought some much needed rain.
-
Laura and myself attended the official launch of the GC Magazine on Tuesday 4th June at the Owners Club House. The event was well attended and it was good to catch up with some old La Quinta staff members, who were present, (J.J & Magdalena).

-
On 31st May a fund raiser was held with La Quinta donating a Monday night dinner for two as a raffle prize.
-
The event raised €9897.45 euro for the Children's Project and Yo Encuentro.

-
A new restaurant with a capacity of 150. called Leña & Karbón (Woodsmoke & Grill), has opened in Las Lomas. Hours of operation are 1pm-11:30 daily. Hopefully, this will help to inject some additional new life into the La Lomas area.

-
On 24th June we featured a new artist at our Monday night dinner, Vanessa Lexxi. She was well received and had lots of guests up and dancing until midnight!. She will be back again in August.

-
We also stayed open late on Tuesday 25th for the England v Slovenia Euro match. Tapas was provided and lots of people attended. Although it was a 0:0 draw England topped group C
-
La Quinta came to the rescue when approached by Rev Helene Öhmanof the LMC St Teresa’s Church, who due to building issues had nowhere to hold their church service on 30th June.
-
Providing our main dining room as a venue, a congregation of 25+ attended for the Sunday service.

The Region of Murcia Invests in Beach Cleaning
- The regional government is to invest €16-million from now until 2026, to aid the clearing of the Mar Menor beaches of the build up of biomass sludge.
-
This sludge consumes oxygen and releases nutrients, which enhances the growth of algae and has a detrimental effect on the water quality.
-
Since 2022 some 37,602 tonnes have already been removed with 2237 tonnes removed this year alone!

The Beach of Calblanque - Finalist in the Condé Naste Traveller Best Beach in Spain 2024
-
Calblanque beach has been chosen by the readers of the magazine Condé Nast Traveller as the best in the Region of Murcia and is among the 10 finalists for best beach in Spain in 2024
-
Readers of the travel and lifestyle publication Condé Nast Traveller will choose the best beach in Spain for 2024.
-
For the Region of Murcia, the readers of Condé Nast Traveller have selected the Playa de Calblanque as the best in area. On previous occasions, the region of Murcia has been represented by Cala Cortina beach in 2023.
-
The publication writes about Calblanque Beach as one of the ‘hidden paradises of the Region of Murcia’ due to its vast unspoilt beaches and the tranquillity of its waters: ‘Located in the Calblanque Natural Park, it is a practically virgin beach, guarded by arid mountains and extensive ochre sand, which contrasts with the greenish blue of the Costa Cálida of Cartagena. In addition, it is surrounded by native fauna and flora, which make it a wild Eden where privacy is sacred and tranquillity is maximum’.

Car Rental Warning!
-
With the summer season upon us a word of warning in regard to the car rental company Goldcar.
-
Tourists are being advised to avoid the car hire company, who were ranked last in a customer satisfaction survey due to 'serious issues’.
-
Goldcar, who operate throughout Europe received an overall score of just 52% in the annual report by consumer group Which?
-
They were also awarded just two stars out of a possible five for value for money, car description matching reality, record given of damage to car, and customer service.
-
Over 20% of customers who used Goldcar said they had issues with the condition of the car, and 23% reported being charged extra either when they picked up or returned the car.
-
Which? said its investigations found cases of the business engaging in "pressure selling tactics" to encourage customers to buy extra insurance at the desk.
-
Rory Boland, editor of magazine Which? Travel, said: "Booking car hire should be straightforward, but all too often it feels like the wild west, with travellers lamenting fraught experiences, poor customer service and spurious fees.
-
A spokesperson for Goldcar, which is owned by Europcar Mobility Group, said: "Goldcar is of course disappointed about the results of the Which? Report”. The research was based on a survey of 2,324 adults, during February and March this year.
-
Goldcar also receives very poor ratings and reviews on many review sites such as Trustpilot, TripAdvisor and the Reviewcentre.

La Quinta Member & Author Writes Her Second Book
-
Linda Lawrence, a member of La Quinta for some 35-years has recently written her second children’s book.
-
There is a story here though (no pun intended), as Linda wrote her first book over 20-years ago. However a conversation with a friend led to the book ‘The Adventures of Bob, Finn & Honeybun’ eventually being published in September 2023.
-
She has just completed her second book called ‘Everyone Needs a Hero’ which will be published later this year.
-
The books are aimed at 3-11 year olds and written in rhyme so as to appeal to those with autism and dyslexia.
-
The books are or will be available via Amazon on Kindle and from Waterstones, Blackwell or Foyles.

Driving in Spain - Part 7 -Traffic Law Relating to Private Roads, Car Parks etc and Part 8 - What to do in the Case of an Accident
-
Here are the laws/advice relating to use of vehicles on private roads etc and also what to do if you are involved in a road traffic accident.
- Article 1 of Spanish Traffic Law states that any public or communal road is subject to traffic law regardless of whether the land is public or private.
-
In general these laws & regulations cover the use of motor vehicles and associated road safety matters and will be applicable nationally. They apply to owners and users of roads and public land suitable for traffic circulation, both urban and interurban, as well as those roads and land that are in common use and in the absence of other rules, to those of private roads and land that are used by an indeterminate community of users.
-
What are ‘Commonly used roads and land’?
-
Commonly used roads and land refers to places open to the free movement of vehicles. The roads on which these vehicles circulate will be subject to the Road Safety Law. Vehicles must have passed the ITV (technical inspection), have current insurance and drivers will be required to be in possession of a driving licence corresponding to the category of vehicle being driven. Many drivers and occupants make the mistake of thinking that when driving on rural roads which are neither asphalted nor signposted etc, road safety regulations do not apply and are often punished for not using a seatbelt or talking on a mobile phone.
-
What is meant by ‘used by an indeterminate community of users’?
-
An ‘indeterminate community of users’, means that not only the owner has access, but that other users can also have access. An example would be a supermarket such as Carrefour; The owner of the car park is Carrefour, which in turn has it open for its customers, thus turning the car park into private land used by an indeterminate community of users. (Public use would be when anyone can have access). Another example would be the car park of a community of neighbours, where each neighbour has a garage. (Common use is when only owners have access.)
-
Carrefour, during business hours has its barriers open. A customer enters the parking area and as it is an undetermined community of people who similarly use the parking area, the rules that govern are the general ones. Therefore, the way to proceed is the same as in a public area.
-
Carrefour closes the car park barriers at 22:00, from that moment, there is a strictly private use of it, so from that moment the owner of parking area, anyone authorised, or security guards will not be governed by traffic law.
-
What these laws provide is that it does not matter in which area you drive, or whether there are road or a path markings, as long as it is a zone of common use, you must comply with traffic regulations relating to both movement (Title I) such as requirements of lights Chapter X of title II), as well as be in possession of a driving licence corresponding to the vehicle in which you drive.
Dealing With the Aftermath of a Road Traffic Accident
-
Having a car accident is traumatic in any circumstance and particularly so in a foreign country.
-
In Spain the PAS system is taught which stands for Protegar-Avisar-Socorrer (Protect-Advise-Assist).
-
It is mostly common sense, but it advises to:
-
Protect: Vehicles are parked in a safe position and that reflective vests are worn.
-
To keep away from a burning vehicle or one carrying hazardous or dangerous goods.
-
To protect the incident by placing warning triangles or waning lights, (mandatory to carry either), in a visible position and to switch on hazard warning lights.
-
Advise: Call 112 providing information regarding location, vehicles, injuries, special circumstances such as persons trapped or vehicles in water etc. Wait for the EMS controllers confirmation before hanging up. -
Assist: Only when you have protected yourself and the scene should you attempt to assist others.
-
Be careful not to aggravate injuries, do not move victims or remove helmets of bikers. Do not administer food or drink. If first aid trained provide assistance. Remain at the scene until released by emergency services
-
You should also carry a ‘European Accident Statement’ in your private car or hire vehicle.
-
If you are involved in a minor accident where no one was injured, just fill in this form and give/send the copy to your insurance company within seven (7) days.
-
In case you do not have this document in your glove box, you can ask a free copy from your insurer alternatively you can download and print the document here: https://cartraveldocs.com/.../European-Accident-Statement...

As we approach the midway point of the year, I can report that the club has been busy so far with continued high levels of occupancy and increased use of La Solana, as we continue to promote both La Quinta and the restaurant.
-
I am sure you are looking forward to your holiday as much as we are at having you stay with us.
-
I wish you all a great vacation at La Quinta in 2024.
-
Here we are then, Season 3 blog #1, the mid year edition, with updates and information for the month of June, about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. But for this month’s meet the staff I am pleased to introduce our newest member of staff, Sandra Vicente Torres from the La Solana team.
Sandra

-
Sandra is one of our newest members of staff and part of our La Solana team.
-
She is 25 years old, was born in Madrid but now lives in Cabo de Palos.
-
Sandra is currently single and has two sisters Iria and Claudia.
-
A trained graphic designer she is also studying criminology, as she aspires to be a criminologist in the future.
-
Prior to being offered a position with us, she spent nearly a year working in Norway.
-
She was introduced to La Quinta by Christina in our accounts department and then applied to work here.
-
Sandra loved our homely, family vibe and she says she couldn’t have found a better place to work.
-
Her first love is her little dog called Nymo who apparently takes up 90% of her time.
-
Sandra also really likes reading and the music.
She says she looks forward to seeing you all when you visit.
Update on May Events
-
May was another busy time here at La Manga with lots going on and the school half term week starting on the 25th.
- During the week we held our first ‘All White Party ‘on Monday 27th and the first pool party of the season on Wednesday 29th May. Nearly everyone who attended on Monday wore white and had a fabulous time eating, drinking and dancing to the music of Alex & Chloe. The dance floor was full all night long.

- La Quinta was a sponsor of the first of two La Manga Owners Golf Competitions held on 12th-14th May. We had good product visibility for both La Quinta and La Solana using strategically placed advertising tee boards throughout the tournament. The competition was very successful and enjoyed by all.
-
Along with most of the other restaurants at La Manga Club, La Solana also took part in the 2024 La Manga Club Ruta de Tapas held between 16th-26th May. We were also invited to showcase our entry at the opening event in Bellaluz Plaza and were interviewed by local TV & radio.

-
Our offering was Adrián’s Shrimp & Avocado ceviche and having sampled it, I have to say it was delicious 😋.
-
Over the 12-day event, thousands of Tapas were prepared and sold at La Manga Club with La Solana selling nearly 400 ourselves. This provided good income to all those businesses that took part.
-
The eventual winner this year was El Bistro. Congratulations to them.

As mentioned last month, the craft fair and market charity event was held by La Manga Adventure Golf on the 18th May.
-
Supported by over 150 visitors and 21 stallholders it raised €370 for ‘The Children's Project’.
-
For those physically impaired, La Manga Golf are now offering (free of charge), the use of an electric mobility scooter to get around the course.
-
Sad news. Our large cactus which was planted in 1986 collapsed in mid May causing some damage to the reception roof and the outside handrail.
-
This required it to be extensively cut back but I am sure it will re-grow over time.

Driving in Spain Part 6 - Use of Golf Buggies on Public Roads
-
Following on from the road safety presentation held in April, here is the latest, definitive guidance regarding the use of golf buggies on the public roads of La Manga Club.
-
Basically, to use a buggy on the roads, it must have been originally constructed for this purpose or converted in accordance to strict parameters in order to meet the requirements of a road going vehicle.
-
The General Community have issued the following statements and advice.
-
“Please remember the use of non-registered, non-ITV passed and non-roadworthy golf buggies on public roads is illegal. The majority of roads in La Manga Club are public. Both drivers and owners using such buggies face unlimited fines and possible imprisonment. Due to a number of recent incidents, we have been advised the Police will be patrolling La Manga Club´s roads more frequently”.

Have You Heard of the ‘Laughter Bridge’ at La Manga del Mar Menor?
-
The Laughter Bridge or as it is commonly known in Spanish ‘El Puente de la Risa’ is the architectural idea of Tomás Maestre and is found at the far end of the La Manga strip with spectacular views out to sea. Location: Urbanización Veneziola, s/n, 30380 La Manga. -
It was built in 1978 imitating the style of the bridges from the Italian city of Venice.
-
The name originates from the construction and steepness of the bridge arch that is almost Ogival in shape, and which causes a lightness/emptiness in the stomach when driving over it in a car makes many people laugh hence the name the Laughter Bridge!

The Fogueres de Sant Joan in Alicante 19th- 24th June 2024
-
This is Alicante’s largest annual event, which was initiated by José María Py in 1928 along the similar lines to the Fallas of Valencia. And to Guy Fawkes in England.
-
The festival is officially recognised as being of International Tourist Interest (Interés Turístico Internacional) and of Intangible Cultural Interest.
-
During the year effigies known as ‘ninots’ of local, national and international characters (often politicians) are constructed. These effigies, are then set up in the streets on the 19th (la plantà).
-
The following morning the ‘despertà’ wakes up the town and the festival of fireworks and firecrackers begins with street parties, parades and competitions taking place during the following days.
-
The highlight of the festivities is known as ‘La cremà’ (the burning) which takes place on 24th and marks the end of the festivities.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 2, Edition 12 (May 2024)
-
Welcome to the month of May here at La Quinta and to the second anniversary of my Chairman’s blog.
-
I can’t believe it’s been 24 editions since I started the first blog in 2022!
-
So far this year we have had no meaningful winter and have been blessed with very mild weather with little rain, something which is actually really needed in Spain as the country is beginning to experience water shortages.
-
As I have mentioned before, wherever possible, please try to conserve this precious resource.
-
May is the start of early summer here is Spain, with longer days, lots of sunshine and rising temperatures.
-
With all the miserable and cold weather across the UK and the rest of northern Europe we are the perfect place to escape for some much needed sunshine.
-
The school half term begins week commencing the 25th May and is one of our busiest weeks of the year.
-
During this week we will be hosting a special ‘White Night’ party, so if you are joining us don’t forget to bring white attire.
-
Here we are then, Season 2 blog #12, the early summer edition, with updates and information for the month of May, about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. This, as always, is sent directly to your email inbox, but it is also accessible on our website too, see…Chairman's Blog (laquintaclub.com) I hope you enjoy!
Meet the Staff
I am now on my final few members of staff to introduce to you. Going forward, perhaps we can feature member’s anecdotes or maybe some of the humorous or memorable things you have done whilst here at La Quinta. Please feel free to email me with them accompanied with supporting photos if you have them.
If there is anything else you would like included in future editions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at chairman@laquintaclub.com
So for this month’s meet the staff I am pleased to introduce Caleh Santos from the La Solana team.
Calebh Santos
-
Calebh is one of our newest members of staff.

-
He is 21 years old and was born in Recife Brazil in 2002.
-
Calebh came to Spain some years ago and currently lives in the nearby seaside town of Mar de Cristal.
-
His father is called Alex and his step-mother Céline they both run a restaurant.
-
Calebh was recruited, after being recommended to us last June to supplement our La Solana team and proved to be very adept.
-
As such he remained with us until the end of September but was re- contacted for the 2024 season starting work in March.
-
Calebh is very likeable and has a warm and friendly disposition. He is always willing to help.
-
Although still quite young, he is also an accomplished waiter and an excellent barman.
-
Calebh loves most sports and also everything related to the sea.
-
He also enjoys music and loves mixing cocktails.
Update on April Events
-
On the back of our appearance of National TV in Spain our Chef, Adrian Ros was invited to showcase his culinary skills at a cooking workshop at SPAR in Cartagena.
-
He produced a variety of fabulous dishes to the delight of the audience.
-
This was followed by an interview on a popular local radio station.

-
Our AGM was held on 21st April and was attended both physically and virtually using our Zoom platform.
-
The resolution for a villa uplift was voted on but was not supported by the members.
-
Disappointingly for such an important proposal, member engagement was very low with only around 9% voting, 30 joining the meeting online and 25 physically attending at La Quinta itself.
-
So although this was put forward after requests by members, we shall obviously not be progressing the villa uplift proposal.
-
As well as the AGM, I also attended the LMC presidents meeting on the 17th April. One of the most discussed agenda items was the reactive use of ariel drones by the security at La Manga Club. It was finally agreed that this could go ahead.
-
The General Community also held a Road Awareness day on the morning of the 19th April with presentations on road regulations & use of golf buggies, safety tips and demonstrations on firefighting and traffic accidents. It was very well attended including Laura & myself and very informative.
-
One of the standout items and something I have mentioned in previous blogs, was the use of buggies.
-
It transpires that all roads including car parks etc. at La Manga Club are subject to Spanish traffic regulations and that most buggies unless registered are not road legal.

-
We welcomed a large Norwegian tennis group in the third week of April. They had booked a special package with us, which included a gala dinner each night of their stay.
-
All had a great time playing tennis and at the club and intend to re-book.
A Guide to Buying Beer in Spanish Supermarkets
-
I am sure it will come as no surprise to you that beer is very popular in Spain, with the country ranking 10th in the world for consumption.
-
It's certainly in high demand here with an average of 60 litres (106 pints), of beer consumed per person per year.
-
Spain is also the second largest brewer of beer in Europe after Germany with around 41.5 million hectolitres produced.
-
So, here's something that may be of interest to you next time you are looking to buy the amber nectar in Spain.
-
The Spanish consumer organisation (OCU), has recently carried out a survey of beer sold in supermarkets throughout the country.
-
The beers were selected and tested from a variety of stores across Spain to find out which brands are the best and which are good value for money.
-
The good news is that there were no really bad beers.
-
Crumpcampo Pilsen, sold for €0.72 per can was the lowest scorer but still received a respectable 60/100 points.
-
Next was Heineken (€0.76), scoring 67 points.
-
Some well known brands, (although still good), scored lower than expected such as Mercadona's Steingburg and Cerveza Alhambra and Saerbrau, sold by Carrefour.
-
Other mid level, good value beers that scored well were: Saerbrau Holandesa at Carrefour and Steinburg at Mercadona for €0.30; Holbrand at Alcampo for €0.31 and Ramblers Classic Lager at Día for €0.33.
-
The three beers that were best recommended overall were:
- Karlsquell, (the cheapest), from Aldi sold at just €0.29 per can.
- Xibeca, which is more expensive at €0.62, but scored the highest with 80/100 points and finally,
- Aurum, the best value for money overall, which is sold by Eroski for just €0.30 and was awarded 70/100.

The Islands of the Mar Menor
-
Did you know that In the Mar Menor you can find 5 different islands?
-
Each one is volcanic and were formed during the Pilocene era, part of the tertiary period.
-
All the islands have protected status due to their high ecological value.
-
The five islands are Isla Perdiguera, Isla del Barón or Isla Mayor, Isla del Sujeto, Isla Redonda or Rondela and Isla del Ciervo.
-
The largest and probably most well know island is Barón Island or Mayor Island with an area of 94 hectares and a height of 104 meters above sea level.
-
It is privately-owned and takes its name from Barón de Benifayó, who bought the island and built a castle-like Neomudéjar-style palace on it. A watchtower was later added in the 1950s
-
The island has the only forest of small palm trees in Europe and is considered a Special Bird Protected Area because of its many different species of birds.
-
Next in size is Isla Perdiguera, with an area of 26 hectares, is only 45 m high and can be reached by boat. It has some tourist infrastructure and a path around the perimeter.
-
La Isla del Ciervo has two volcanic cones the tallest being 49 meters high and an area of 16.5 hectares.
-
Isla del Sujeto and Isla Redonda are both close to La Manga, they are the smallest of the islands at 2.5 and 2.2 hectares respectively. They are only 3 meters high, but are important nesting areas for birds.
-
There are many boat trips that sail to the islands with afternoon/evening excursions affording beautiful sunsets.
-
For more information about the islands see Mar Menor Islands | Mar Menor Mar Mayor

Local Area Restaurants
-
Having been asked by a member to include local restaurants on and around La Manga Club, I have duly complied a list and the types of food that they generally offer.
-
This links nicely to the fact that many now require online booking and as such our reception staff will no longer be offering a restaurant booking service for our guests.
-
I am not personally endorsing any of them (except La Solana of course), as individual perceptions can be different.
-
I hope that the list is useful in helping you choose your restaurant for evening dining.

Driving in Spain Part 5 - Use of Headsets, Headphones or Earbuds Whilst Driving
-
In Spain, it is illegal to wear any form of headset when driving, which includes headphones, or ‘buds’, and also Bluetooth devices commonly used to connect to mobile phones.
-
This law applies to the drivers or riders of all vehicles, including bicycle and scooter riders, as well as drivers of motorised vehicles.
-
The only exception to these regulations (and a recent legislation change), is for certain approved devices for communication on motorcycles.
-
The reason why headphones and headsets are banned when driving in Spain is it is considered that a driver must be fully aware of their surroundings at all times, and not distracted.
-
The ability to hear clearly is thought to be no less important than the ability to see. This rationale extends to playing music too loud when driving, which is also an offence.
-
A further exception is the wearing of hearing aids provided and approved for medical reasons, which will be documented on Spanish driving licences in the codes section.

Good News for Tourism in the Region of Murcia
- The tourism sector in the region of Murcia is experiencing something of a growth spurt, according to recently published statistics.
-
More employment opportunities were created in March, with over 2500 additional workers employed as compared to 2023.
-
This is very encouraging for the region’s tourism industry and is helping to enhance Murcia’s economy, due to increased activity and investment in the sector.
-
Continued growth across the region has apparently been maintained for over 36-months, contributing to the overall economic vitality of the region, and it’s future economic prosperity and development.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 2, Edition 11 (April 2024)
-
Welcome to Spring (which officially started on 20th March), and to the second half of Easter week here in the province of Murcia, we are a quarter of the way through the year already!.
-
We have been blessed with very mild weather so far in 2024 with little rain, something which is really needed in Spain as the country is beginning to experience water shortages.
-
As I have mentioned before, wherever possible, please try to conserve this precious resource.
-
In fact Murcia experienced a mini heatwave in the third week of March with temperature reaching the high twenties.
-
Overall its been a good Month for us here at La Quinta with increased levels of occupancy throughout, including the early Easter week, which until we began advertising availability was initially under-booked.
-
Due to the Easter holidays you will receive April’s blog a few day’s earlier than normal on the 27th March.
-
So, here we are then, Season 2 blog #11, the spring edition, with updates and information for the month of April, about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. This, as always, is sent directly to your email inbox, but it is also accessible on our website too, see…Chairman's Blog (laquintaclub.com) I hope you enjoy !
Meet the Staff
-
As I mentioned last month, I have nearly exhausted the ‘Meet the Staff’ feature but I am looking for alternative features to fill the void.
-
Perhaps we can feature member’s anecdotes or maybe some of the humorous or memorable things you have done whilst here at La Quinta. Please feel free to email me with them accompanied with supporting photos if you have them.
-
If there is anything else you would like included in future editions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at chairman@laquintaclub.com
-
So for this month’s meet the staff it is just José Flores from the La Solana team as due to shyness, the remaining two members of kitchen staff Pilar & Cristina have declined to appear.
-
Normally I ask the staff to supply me with their draft bio’s and then re-write what they have told me. However the narrative that José sent me was so heartfelt & eloquently written that I am leaving it exactly as he wrote it.
José Flores (in His Own Words)
-
“My name is José Ángel Flores, I am 44 years old and I am the father of a lovely 18-year-old teenager called Africa. -
Originally from Albacete, I currently reside in the beautiful city of Cartagena.
-
With over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, I have found my passion in working with people and clients.
-
I love paying attention to details and providing exceptional service in every interaction.
-
I joined La Quinta in 2017 for a temporary service, but the warmth of the atmosphere and the pleasant clientele convinced me to stay.
-
Outside of work, my interests revolve around two passions: sport fishing and web development.
-
I enjoy spending time outdoors, connecting with nature while fishing, and I am also passionate about the creativity and problem-solving that web development offers.
-
In summary, I am a dedicated professional with a solid track record in hospitality, a committed father, and passionate about sport fishing and web development.
-
I am always looking to learn and grow both personally and professionally while enjoying life in this wonderful coastal city”.
Update on March Events
-
It was a very exciting time for us in mid March, as the Spanish national TV show that La Solana took part in back in November 2023 aired on the 14th, see article below.
-
March into April is a busy time for our staff preparing for the summer, producing annual accounts & audits for our forthcoming AGM.
-
Talking of which, you will have received a resolution proposal for a mild villa uplift accompanying the AGM pack. This has been prepared in response to member feedback and I trust you will give it serious consideration.
-
We also welcomed our second Polish sporting group (tennis) of 25, who stayed from 23rd February until early March. They all thoroughly enjoyed their visit and were very impressed, so much so that they intend to book again.
-
What we thought may be a potentially quiet pre-Easter week (23rd-30th March), ended up being very popular with both rentals and members booking during the week or extending their stays.
-
Lastly a quick update on my friend Alan Blake and the fundraising for MND that I mentioned last month. Sadly Alan died on 2nd March the day before the charity event took place. However as of the time of writing over £3500 has been raised. There is still time to donate should you wish to do so: http://www.justgiving.com/page/eawhiteoakd-mnd

Historical La Manga del Mar Menor - A look Back in Time to the early 1970’s
-
After last month’s feature about the demolishing of the ghost building (the Largo Mar hotel), here is an achieved image showing the hotel under construction in a totally under developed part of the Mar Menor taken in 1974 and one of the strip around the same time.
-
As you can see there was virtually no development. It looked so much different then than it does today!

*****Stop Press…..Fame at Last...La Solana Appears on Spanish National TV!*****
-
Last November we were invited to participate in the 'Batalla de Restaurantes' (Battle of the Restaurants) a brand-new cook-off show created for LaSexta (Channel 6), the renowned national Spanish television channel and hosted by Spanish celebrity chef Alberto Chicote.
-
Focusing on showcasing chef’s talents in producing regional dishes, four restaurants were chosen from each of eight regions in Spain, with programmes airing over eight weeks and La Solana appearing on TV on Thursday the 14th March.
-
We were chosen to represent the Murcia region by LaSexta who conducted extensive research, into customer reviews, press articles, and social media advertising of hundreds of top-class restaurants.
-
We competed against: Restaurante Maloca - La Manga, Mar Menor, Freiduría Mar Menor - Puerto Tomás Maestre & Chiringuito Cala Reona - Cabo de Palos.
-
All restaurants were judged on a number of criteria including the preparation and delivery of the regional dish ‘Caldero’.
-
The cook-off was highly competitive and it was very difficult to separate the top two with La Solana coming runners up to the eventual winners, Restaurante Maloca who produced a more traditional version of the dish (see dish of the month, below).
-
It was a fantastic achievement to have been chosen from so many potential restaurants in the area in the first instance and an outstanding effort from our chef Adrián and his assistants Adriana and Pilar in delivering some wonderful and totally unique dishes.
-
The TV show also gave us an excellent opportunity to showcase nationally, our staff, facilities & cuisine and will no doubt raise our profile, provide much publicity and encourage visitors to our restaurant over the coming months.
-
In fact it has already started with no less than 6-tables being booked by Spanish guests the day after the programme aired!
-
You can follow the show on Instagram @batalla_rest via this link: Batalla-de-restaurantes or on YouTube: https://youtu.be/w_q_WqftVvc?si=wCnJWs5M8cOy83LN

Who’s for Coffee? A Guide to Drinking Java in Spain
-
Most of us love our coffee, but did you know there are many varieties available to sample here in Spain?
-
So here’s a quick guide to what they actually are:
-
Café Solo: This is a small cup of strong, black espresso. -
Café Americano: Again black, but contains the same amount of coffee as a café solo but with more water, resulting in a milder flavour.
-
Café Cortado: A small cup of espresso with just a of splash of milk. The Spanish word cortado means “cut,” so think of it as coffee “cut” with a small amount of milk.
-
Café con Hielo: A summertime favourite, it is simply coffee with ice. It comes with two glasses: one containing black espresso and another containing ice cubes.
-
Carajillo: This is with no milk, instead, it has alcohol. A carajillo is an espresso served with rum, whisky or brandy.
-
Café con Leche: This is prepared with equal parts of espresso and milk, which can be hot or cold.
-
Manchado or Leche Manchada: Literally translated it means “stained” (or “stained milk”). It consists of mainly warm milk “stained” with a splash coffee.
-
Café Bombón: Espresso with sweetened condensed milk, great if you have a sweet tooth.
-
Descafeinado: This is coffee with most of the caffeine removed.
-
Asiático: A speciality local coffee/liqueur, it is made from Espresso coffee, Licor 43, brandy, and condensed milk. garnished with a coffee bean and a slice of lemon peel.

So how do you like your coffee?
- Caliente: With hot, steamed milk, Fría: With cold milk, Templada: With a mix of hot and cold milk.
-
And..What type of glass would you like?
-
Taza: A mug with a handle or Vaso: A small clear glass with no handle. Most traditional bars in Spain will serve coffee this way.

The Mar Menor Village of Los Urrutias

-
Located just 16kms from La Quinta, Los Urrutias is a small seaside village located on the coast of the Mar Menor. It is bordered to the north by Punta Brava and El Carmolí and to the south by Los Nietos.
-
The area has limited history as it was sparsely populated due to constant attacks from Barbary Pirates and it wasn’t until the 17th-18th centuries that the population began to increase as the result of nearby Cartagena becoming a military/maritime base.
-
In the 19th century it became known as Urrutias when Basque soldiers with the family surname Urrutia, settled in the town after the Carlist civil wars in a palace called La Casa del Miedo.
-
Located at the entrance of the town it was known as ‘The House of Fear’ but was demolished in 1994.
-
Nearby can also be found the ‘Black Tower’, which was built by order of King Philip II and at the time of its construction was barely 100 meters from the shore.
-
Los Urrutias is also known for its production of flour and the old mills including one built in the 18th century on the Carmoli mount can be visited. -
The village has its own church called the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, which was built in the 20th century. Constructed on the site (and using some elements), of the previous chapel, known as the chapel of Los Urrutias, as it is still today, the church is quite ornate and can be visited by the public.
-
Los Urrutias has a promenade that runs through half of the village. The beaches are of greyish sand and are separated by stone breakwaters designed to retain the sand so that it does not wash away into the Mar Menor.
-
Today it has a population of some 1150 inhabitants, shared with nearby the Estrella de Mar Urbanization and is a popular, if small tourist destination with two hotels, a marina, several restaurants, supermarkets, a veterinary clinic and a wine bar.
-
On 16th July the festival of the Virgen del Carmen, (Patron Saint of sailors), is held with a procession through the streets of the village and along its coasts culminating in mounting the Saint’s image on a boat and sailing along the Mar Menor.
Special Dish of the month - Adrián’s version of Caldero (as Prepared for the ‘Battle of the Restaurants’ National TV Show)
- This is our chef Adrián's interpretation of the Caldero classic, which he created for the Spanish TV show -‘Battle of the Restaurants’ filmed last November.
-
It is a very different and unique variation of the traditional Murcian rice dish and comprises of two distinctive elements.
Part 1: A crunchy cookie made with Caldero and tapioca, containing confit onion gel, sea lettuce gel, sea spaghetti, crystal shrimp, shrimp lacquered in ñora oil*, parsley sprouts, and chive flowers.
Part 2: Is a Caldero Sushi comprising three pieces of futomaki (soft-shell crab and lime aioli), three pieces of prawn uramaki, lettuce, avocado, and aioli, three flambéed lecha nigiri (local white fish), with ñora oil and charcoal salt, home-made aioli, and Caldero soy sauce.
- As a Sushi lover, for me this sounds absolutely delicious!
*ñora is a dried spicy pepper with a strong flavour, used in fish dishes throughout Spain.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 2, Edition 10 (March 2024)
-
Hola, Felices Pascuas (Happy Easter) and welcome to the month of March from the beautiful Mar Menor.
-
With both January and February behind us we are well on our way to Spring, which officially starts on the 20th March.
-
We also have an early Easter this year, so don’t forget to take full advantage of our Easter Week Special Offer (see below).
-
There are numerous Holy Week celebrations to see as well, in the towns and villages throughout the region that are certainly worth a visit, (see articles below).
-
In last month’s blog I talked about the warm weather we were experiencing in January. Well, it appears that 2024 was in fact the warmest January since 1960 according to the Spanish weather agency AMET.
-
The region of Murcia enjoyed daily temperatures 3.2°C higher than average regularly reaching into the mid to high 20’s.
-
February, like January has been exceptionally warm too, complimented by good occupancy levels throughout the month.
-
So, we are off at pace then with Season 2 blog #10, my early spring edition, with updates and information for the month of March, about the people, activities and events happening in and around La Quinta, La Manga Club, and the Cartagena/Murcia regions. This, as always, is sent directly to your email inbox, but it is also accessible on our website too, see…Chairman's Blog (laquintaclub.com) I hope you enjoy!
Meet the Staff
This feature will sadly soon come to an end as I am fast running out of members of staff to feature. I have covered nearly everyone who works at La Quinta and there are now only a handful left.
But don’t worry I am looking an alternative features to fill the void and as I mentioned last time, if there is anything you would like included in future editions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at chairman@laquintaclub.com
So this month it is Judi from the La Solana team and Diego from the kitchen.
Both are relatively new members of staff, having been with us for just one and two years respectively.

Yudelmis or Judi as she is known to everyone, is one of our newest members of staff, having only joined us last year as part of the La Solana team. We are pleased that she will be returning again this year. -

Before she started work at La Quinta she trained and worked as a dental assistant to Dr Rodrigo at Muak’s Dental Clinic in Los Belones.
-
She has also been employed at Surfing La Manga and for 10 years at the Principe Felipe hotel at La Manga Club.
-
Her hobbies and pastimes are going out and dancing.
-
Judi says she loves to smile and to enjoy life and is really delighted to be working here at La Quinta.
Diego Oviedo
-
Diego is 26 years old and lives in Estrecho de San Ginés, a small village close to La Manga Club. -
He has been working with us here for 2-years, having been recruited through an employment agency at the same time as Cynthia.
-
Diego is single and lives with his parents and sister who is 4-years older than him.

His father is from Seville in Andalusia and his mother is from Cartagena.

It’s Down at Last! An Update on the Demolition of the La Manga ‘Ghost Building’
-
As mentioned last month, the demolition of the derelict Lagomar hotel in La Manga, often referred to as the ‘ghost building’ has reached its conclusion.
-
The unfinished twin tower block monstrosity, originally built back in 1974 and occupying an area of 20,000-square-metres was dismantled piece by piece, rather than using explosives as the building is at risk of collapsing in on itself.
-
A massive 85,000 cubic metres of rubble is being removed from the site before any potential redevelopment can take place.
-
The estimated cost of this work is close to €800,000, which will be billed to the Lagomar’s owners, the commercial company Intramanga Turística.

Pending Drought in Spain?
-
Amid the drought that is beginning to affect parts of Spain, the Murcia region stands out as an exception as it continues to provide an uninterrupted water supply to its residents.
-
Unlike Cataluña and Andalucia, (who have already experienced water cuts), Murcia utilises a diverse mix of water supplies, including surface and groundwater, transfer from the Tajo Segura, desalination and recycling.
-
Indeed targeted investment in this infrastructure has helped to shield Murcia from water supply cuts since 2003.

Airport Incentive Package from Aena!
-
The airport operator Aena’s Board of Directors, has approved an incentive package for the 32 Spanish airports that had less than 3 million passengers in 2023.
-

-
The airlines will be exempt from paying the additional per-passenger fee for travellers imposed in 2023 for three consecutive years.

In addition to this and until March 2027 these incentives will be extended to airlines who open up new routes to new destinations in those airports with more than 3 million passengers and where growth is increased compared to the previous equivalent season on routes with Asia.
|
|
New Routes to Corvera (RMU) Airport
-
Following on with the aviation theme, there is some more good news for Corvera.
-
The Spanish airline Volotea, (that connects small and medium-sized European cities), has recently inaugurated some new routes.

Events & Activities for March 2024
A visit to the The Santa Clara Museum in Murcia?
-
Located in the heart of Murcia’s city centre, this museum occupies the north wing of the Santa Clara Convent. -
Originally a palatial residence for Islamic nobility during the 12th and 13th centuries, it became a religious building and convent in the 14th century.
-
A visit provides not only an insight into historical Islamic art and architecture of Murcia but also the private and secluded world of a convent.
-
Entrance to the museum is free and is open on Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00am-13:00pm and 16:30pm-18:30pm, and on Sundays from 10:00am-13:00pm.
-
It is located on Avenue Alfonso X el Sabio 1, 30007 Murcia.
The Sima de la Higuera - Pliego
-
Know as the ‘Cave of the Fig Tree’, this hidden treasure located near the town of Pliego is the largest cave system in the Region of Murcia. -
At more than 5,500 meters long, it features some very unique characteristics and natural rock formations featuring many stalactites and stalagmites.
-
Its entrance is located in Monte del Cabezo y Cuesta de Aledo, next to a fig tree, after which it was named.
-
The location has a rare type of karst system, which can be found in only 5-10% of caves worldwide and because of these unusual structural features is becoming something of worldwide interest.
-
Visits are for the able bodied and are strictly by appointment only (see link below), as the caves can only be accessed by abseiling down a rope with a specialist guide, wearing the correct safety equipment.
-
An exciting activity for the more adventurous and certainly not for the claustrophobic.

Easter Celebrations in Cartagena 22nd - 31st March 2024
-
Easter Week commemorations in Cartagena are renown for their magnificent floral decorations which adorn many of the religious statues. -
There exists 'rivalry' between the two main religious brotherhoods, the Marrajos who wear purple robes and the Californios who wear red.
-
The origins of the first brotherhood date back to the beginning of the 17th century, while the second was founded in 1747.
-
Almost all of the colourful processions take place at night over ten days and have unique lavish floral decorations on the 'pasos' (floats), that bear religious images. Most start and finish at the church of Santa María de Gracia.
-
Visitors attending to watch the events can buy tickets for seats from sales booths set up in the squares of Plaza de San Sebastián, Plaza del Icue, and on Calle Aire.

Exploring the Region of Murcia - The Town of Roldán
-
Roldán, a town some 45kms/28miles from La Manga Club and only 20 minutes inland from the Mar Menor is within the municipality of Torre Pacheco and part of the Campo de Cartagena.
-
The area is predominately flat with just one 312m high mountain called ‘Cabezo Gordo’ punctuating the landscape.
-
Evidence of Neanderthal man has been been found in Roldán on the mount at ‘Sima de la Palomas’.
-
The Romans also appear to have occupied the area, quarrying stone from the mountain for building use in Cartagena and the remains of a Roman villa and associated artifacts such as coins, pottery & ceramics having been discovered there.
-
The town is and has been a farming village/town since the 16th Century, but agriculture was very limited for over five centuries due to the very dry climate with an average annual rainfall of just 148 mm or 6”.
-
Roldán grew as the result of the arrival of the ‘Tajo-Segura’ water canal, that provided extensive irrigation and hugely increased agriculture in the area.
-
There are now some 50,000 hectares of irrigated land in The Campo de Cartagena area, (which Roldán is part of), producing crops such as citrus, artichokes, melons, salad vegetables, broccoli, cauliflowers, and potatoes.
-
Today the cosmopolitan town with over 7000 inhabitants, (the 2nd largest in the municipality), has prospered and has a wide range of businesses, shops, restaurants, bars and accommodations.
-
It has also become very popular with tourists and ex-pats due to its proximity to a number of golf courses and resorts in the vicinity.

…...and lastly!
*******Motor Neurone Disease*******
-
I guess you are probably inundated with requests to support charities, but I would like to tell you about one close to my heart in the hope that you will be kind enough to make a donation.
-
My good friend Alan (71), who I met and who became my gym buddy at my local leisure centre, has been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), see: www.mndassociation.org
-
His is the brain stem, (bulbar) variant and affects nearly all of the autonomous muscles in the body.
-
In just a few short months he is already unable to breath unassisted, cannot swallow, so has to be fed via a tube directly connected to his stomach and is starting to suffer from Frontotemporal dementia. The prognosis is not good and there is no cure, (yet) for this disease.
-
Before he became ill, I have to admit, I knew little about this awful and unforgiving disease, but having found out more about it, I felt compelled to try to raise funds to assist in finding a cure.
-
Having approached ‘Everyone Active’ the group who run my local sports & leisure centre, between us, we have arranged to hold a charity day on Sunday the 3rd March in Swanley, Kent in support of MND.
-
The day will include a variety of sponsored sporting events and activities including a 24-hour sponsored spin-a-thon class. There will also be a number of auctions and I on behalf of La Quinta have donated a week in one of our villas as one of these auction prizes.
-
Other donated auction lots include tickets to see premiership side Crystal Palace, a years membership of the sports centre and a years membership of the local golf club.
-
A just giving page has also been set up by ‘Everyone Active’ see: http://www.justgiving.com/page/eawhiteoakd-mnd and both the MND charity and I would be most grateful if you would consider making a donation in order to help find a cure for this disease.
-
And if you don’t live too far from Swanley, why not come along on the day to support or take part in some of the fund raising events? See: Facebook or watch a message from former Olympic athlete Colin Jackson https://fb.watch/qsxQJiP7x6
-
Lastly, as Alan is a lifetime supporter of Leeds United, I managed to obtain a signed picture of Gordon Strachan OBE, who played for them from 1989-1995 for him.
-
I presented this to Alan at Maidstone hospital on 2nd February. Many thanks to Gordon and to David Simms at Champions PLC UK for assisting me with this.
