Chairman’s Blog - Season 4, Edition 4 (September 2025)

 

• Welcome to the month of September here at La Manga and to the 40^th edition of the blog!

• A really lovely month in which to visit, with the weather still fantastic, but things just a little bit less hectic, now the kids are back at school.

• But don’t fear, summer is far from over and there is still a full programme of entertainment and activities on Monday evenings and Wednesday afternoons, throughout the month and we shall also be continuing with our varied menus and our sushi Friday’s too.

• So it’s time to kick back, chill out and indulge yourself in that well earned relaxing holiday and let us make your stay another memorable one.

• I am personally looking forward to September, as my family and I shall be visiting, having had to change our normal summer dates, due to a serious accident involving a close family member.

• It will also be really great to experience La Quinta at a different time of year.

• So please see our September activities poster below, detailing no less than nine individual happenings during the month.

 

Updates on August 2025 

• Well it was another really busy month here at La Quinta in August with guests experiencing record hot heatwave temperatures ranging from 30°C to nearly 45°C in parts of Spain.

• Our first Monday event of August, a Black & White party held on the 4^th, was an outstanding success. We broke the all time record for the most guests ever, with an amazing 143 people attending, including 30 external guests. The following week on the 11th we had a very pleasing 90 guests for our Spanish themed Olé-Olé party, then yet another superb attendance of 132 people (again including 30 external guests), for our Aloha party on the 18^th and finally another 90 for our Full Moon/White Party on the 25^th. That’s a total of in excess of 450 attendees at Monday night events for the month. A fantastic effort, I am sure you’ll agree and clear evidence of the growing popularity of these varied events!!

• I would like to thank everyone for helping to support the club by using La Solana this year, please keep it up…

• As our kids disco, (hosted by the very talented Verity), was also very popular, in addition to the one she hosted at the end of July and on the 8^th, she agreed to hold two more on 15^th & 22^nd August. Thank you Verity for helping to add an extra dynamic to La Quinta and for making our younger guests holidays so much fun and so memorable.

  

• Lastly, here are some photos of the #SummerOfFun2025 that everyone enjoyed at our events during the month.

 

 

 

 

• On the 8^th August at just before 10pm, many people witnessed what they thought was an an epic meteor display, part of the annual August Perseid meteor showers.

• What they actually saw was the break up of space debris from the Chinese Jielong-3 rocket, entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

• This massive fireball travelling at 217,000 kph, was seen streaking across the skies for 182kms, south west from Valencia province, before exploding some 86kms above Los Arejos (Àguilas), in the region of Murcia.

 

• On the 14^th & 15^th, we had the first consignment of our new laundry equipment delivered and installed. This was funded by the monies (€286K), we applied for and have recently received from the EU Subventions, saving La Quinta a considerable amount of money, that would needed to have been spent from our capital fund. Suffice to say our laundry staff are delighted!

Record August Heatwave in Spain

• Spain experienced 'the most intense' heatwave on record this August, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

• This resulted in wildfires in the north and west of the country and sadly some 1,100 deaths, which have been attributed to the heatwave.

• The agency said that readings for the August 3rd-18th heatwave exceeded the previous record, set in July 2022, and showed an average temperature 4.6 degrees Celsius higher than that expected. 

• 44°C was experienced in Seville & Córdoba, just shy of the all time record temperature of 46°C, which was set in the town of El Granado, back in June exceeding the previous highest temperature of 45.2°C, set in Seville back in 1965.

• This is part of a pattern of warmer summers with four of the five most intense heatwaves occurring since 2019. 

• AEMET has recorded 77 heatwaves in Spain, (six of them 4C or more above the average), since records began in 1975.

• I hope you have noticed our new poster on the advertising hoarding adjacent to the main entrance (gate 1) of La Manga Club.

The Regions of Murcia

• This is a map showing the nine different autonomous regions that make up the of the entire Region of Murcia.

• Murcia is the 10^th most populated part of Spain, with a population of some 1.6 million, a number that increases substantially during the holiday seasons.

• It covers an area of 11,314 km² (4368 sq miles) and is the 9^th largest in Spain.

Please be Aware of the Blue Dragon (Glaucus Atlanticus)!

• Please be aware, particularly if you are going to the beach with children.

• There have been some sightings on the beaches around Torrevieja, of the Blue Dragon sea slug, which they may find their way to the Mar Menor area.

• These beautiful but rare marine creatures float upside-down on the surface of the water using a gas bubble in their stomachs to stay afloat.

• They are only about an inch long with six appendages, each with finger-like projections that they use for swimming and storing stinging cells. 

• These creatures are blue and silver and float with the blue side of their bodies facing upwards, blending in with the blue of the water and the silver/grey dorsal side facing downwards, blending in with the sunlight reflecting on the ocean's surface when viewed from below the surface.

• They actually feed on other pelagic creatures, such as the Portuguese man o' war and other venomous siphonophores, storing nematocysts within their own tissues as a defence against predators.

• Humans handling the slug may receive a very painful and potentially dangerous sting so its best to observe them but not to touch. If you are stung, rinse the area with salt water, avoid rubbing it, and seek medical attention if required. 

 

Events and Activities for September 2025

  

Running of the Bulls - Calasparra - 2^nd- 8^th September 2025

• The town of Calasparra is located about 90-minutes from La Quinta and these events are the highlight of this Murcian town’s cultural calendar.

• In addition to the running of the bulls, the week includes Novilladas (young bullfights), rice festivals, concerts, and parades.

• It is a blend of tradition, gastronomy, and excitement in this scenic and historical Spanish town.

 Festival of Moors and Christians in Murcia 9^th - 16^th September 2025

• An event of national tourist interest, this festival Commemorates two major events: the founding of the city of Murcia in 825 by Abderraman II and the handing over of the keys by the Muslims to the Infante of Castile, (later King Alfonso X the Wise), in 1243.

• Taking place at the Medieval Camp, located in the San Esteban garden, it’s located where visitors can enjoy a festive atmosphere and sample local produce.

• The grand parade itself is held on Saturday 13^th, when the Moorish and Christian sides parade through the city's neighbourhoods.

• The Embassy Play (a performance originating from the popular theatre of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), of the Murcia Foundation is held on Sunday 14^th at the Plaza del Cardenal Belluga.

• Finally the handing over of the keys is held on Monday 15^th, depicting the triumphant entry of Prince Alfonso of Castile into Murcia, where he later received the keys to the city.

Watch the IX Camino de la Cruz Punta Este Trophy - 13^th September 2025

• The 9^th edition of this sailing regatta will be held on Saturday September 13^th and will have two different races from the yacht clubs in both Cartagena and Torrevieja.

• An event growing in success every year, there will be some 60 participating boats departing from the Cartagena Regatta Club and the Real Club Náutico de Torrevieja.

• It is hoped to attract around 400 sailors from across the area, with trophy presentations at the Trips Summer Club complex in Cabo de Palos.

   

Scenic Wine Tour & 4 Course Lunch (With Wine Pairing) - Jumilla - 16^th September 2025

• Mediterranean Cartagena Tours will be running a scenic Jumilla wine tour to Bodegas Viña Elena on Tuesday 16^th September.

• It’s a full 7-hour adventure from 9am-4pm, with multiple different local pick up points and costs €70 per person.

La Manga del Mar Menor’s Fiesta’s - 17^th- 21^st September 2025

• The annual La Manga Fiestas for 2025 are being held in and around Plaza Bohemia between 17^th- 21^st September.

• With marquees, live music, entertainment, food, sports, games and more, it’s not to be missed.

• One of the highlights of the fiestas at 10am onwards on the 21^st is a special motorcycle rally.

Serious Cricket 100 at La Manga Club 18^th- 21^st September 2025

• For cricket fans, here’s an event you may be interested in.

• Serious Cricket and 8 Sports Management will be hosting their eighth annual cricket festival at La Manga Club, from Thursday 18^th to Saturday 21^st September.

• The tournament gives teams the opportunity to complete in a fantastic end of season event.

• On Thursday afternoon games will start for early arrivals, with the evening playing host to a welcome event.

• On Friday games will start around 10am and finish late afternoon, with two pitches running simultaneously.

• On Saturday games will commence around 10am, with the conclusion of the tournament in mid-afternoon.

• The final evening awards dinner will begin around 8pm.

XXXVI Carthaginians and Roman Festivals - Cartagena 19th-28th September 2025

• It’s here again, the Carthaginians and Roman Festivals, declared an event of International Tourist Interest.

• Held in nearby Cartagena from 19^th- 28^th September, it commemorates the historical events that took place during the Second Punic War.

• Among the activities are the Foundation of Qart Hadast, the Destruction of Saguntum, the Roman Senate, the Oracle of the Goddess Tanit, the Centuriated Elections, the Landing and Hiring of Mercenaries and Homage to the Fallen or the Extinguishing of the Sacred Fire.

Free guided tour (in English) of La Manga del Mar Menor - 20^th September 2025

• This is a 5km walking tour, starting at 09:30 from the entrance to the Puerto Tomás Maestre and traces the origin and history of La Manga.

• You will visit the bridge of El Estacio (the channel that connects the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean), the lighthouse, water storage facilities used in the past by lighthouse-keepers and their families and the home of Tomás Maestre (who is credited with ‘inventing’ tourism in La Manga in the mid-20th century).

• Lasting approximately 2-hours it will allow time at the end to visit to the weekly market and for a leisurely lunch in La Manga!

• It is completely free but pre-booking is required.

XXII Antiques Fair and Classic Car Show - Torre Pacheco 26^th - 28^th September 2025 

• Organised by the Ruta del Sol Club and held from Friday to Sunday at the IFEPA centre in nearby Torre Pacheco, this is Spain’s largest antiques and classic car show, the Palacio de Ferias y Exposiciones de la Región de Murcia

• Featuring both a wide variety of nostalgic items & antiques and a display of fabulous classic cars, it will be a great weekend for all.

• The IFEPA, can be found at Avenida Gerardo Molina, 117, 30700 Torre Pacheco, Murcia.

Upcoming Event - European Senior Masters Golf Championship at La Manga Club - 6th-9th November 2025

• Whilst I appreciate that it is only September, this is just a heads up if you were considering visiting to watch this exciting and entertaining golfing event later in the year.

• A global event, which is featured on Sky Sports TV and will be jointly sponsored by Champions (UK PLC) & Equals Money for 2025, is going from strength to strength with prize money set to increase again from the €375,000 pot in 2024.

• Attended by a host of well known golfers, celebrities and other sporting personalities, it promises to be a truly fantastic event.

• The summer has been a blast here at the club and very busy with guests enjoying the record breaking hot weather and all the activities and events that we have had on offer.

• For the first time (for the little ones), we have hosted four kids disco’s (run by the fantastic Verity), in July and August and these have all been really successful.

• We shall be offering them again next summer and during half term this October!

• We do continue with most of our events throughout September too, so you won’t miss out on anything.

 

• Finally, it continues to be a challenging time for the committee, as can be seen by the activities, behaviour and sadly personal comments, received from certain individuals, who are part of a group of dissatisfied members.

• We consider some of this to be wholly unacceptable, particularly, as we are members ourselves and are all volunteers.

• Although we struggle to understand why, it seems clear that some of this is purely personal.

• Finally, we do hope you understand that everything the committee, the management and the staff do is for the benefit of the members and hope that you will continue to support us in these endeavours.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 4, Edition 3 (August 2025)

 

• Well, here we are then, August already and it’s now the height of summer and both hot, hot, hot & busy, busy, busy at La Quinta.

• The great news is that La Quinta has been considerably busier so far this summer, than we were in 2024, with both those staying with us and outside guests, enjoying everything we have to offer.

• Our extensive selection of dishes, have been a big success, particularly the new for 2025 - ‘Street Food’ menu and our Sushi Friday's.

• Monday nights have been well supported thus far and we have no less than four different themed parties to choose from this season; a white party, a black & white party, an Aloha party and an Olé-Olé party.

• We are also offering a varied selection of musical entertainers for your enjoyment and for you to listen & dance to. These are; Alex & Chloe, Laly, Lydia, Two-Twenties & Vanessa Soul.

• Our Aloha parties on the 30^th June and 28^th July, our Olé-Olé party on the 7^th, the Black & White party on 14^th and our full moon/white party on the 21^st were all really successful, with excellent attendances of around 85-95 guests at each event.

• Our Wednesday pool parties have also been very well attended too, with guests enjoying poolside entertainment from either of our saxophonists, Alex & Peri or the new, but really popular Karaoke with Verity.

• The Kids Disco on Friday 25^th July was brilliant and very lucrative, with many outside guests patronising La Solana for drinks, whilst the kids enjoyed the disco.

• It runs all through August too, with two more kids disco's on Friday the 8^th and 15^th.

 

• We also showed the ‘Women’s UEFA Euro Final' in La Solana on the 27^th. It was extremely well attended as supporters came to watch the English & Spanish sides compete. Congratulations to England, the eventual 3:1 winners, following a nerve racking penalty shoot out after the match finished 1 :1. 

 

• More great news, La Manga Adventure Divers will be back again this summer, offering free pool try dives every Sunday at 11:30am -12:30pm.

• So, if you are visiting this August, I do hope you have a superb time and a #SummerOfFun2025, but again, please don’t forget to support us by using La Solana, as much as possible during your stay.

• Lastly some good news, if you fly into Alicante and drive down to La Quinta. The southbound tunnel on the AP7, which has been closed since the 9^th May, (after a fatal lorry fire), reopened again in July.

Visit the Artisan Market in Los Alcázares Throughout August 2025

• The City Council of Los Alcázares & the Regional Crafts Guild are hosting an artisan market at Calera Beach throughout the month of August.

• Browse the many stalls offering unique hand made creations, crafted by artisans from the region of Murcia.

• Open daily from 7pm to midnight it’s not to be missed.

    

A Mar Menor Ferry Service, a Water Taxi, a Glass Bottom Boat and a Sunset Cruise to Try This Summer!

• It’s a real nautical theme in this blog, with four different marine activities to choose from.

• Firstly there is a ferry boat service crossing the Mar Menor from La Manga to Santiago de la Ribera on the mainland.

• Offering 5-services daily, it's only €6 per person (kids 0-4 free), so it's great value.

Water Taxi

• There is also a water taxi service operating from the fishing pier at Los Alcázares - to La Manga, Lo Pagan, Los Urritias. La Mestiza and restaurant El Rubio 360°.

A Boat Excursions to Isla Grosa in the Mediterranean?

• Leaving daily from Club Náutico del Puerto Tomás Maestre, via the Estacio bridge to Isla Grosa, is a glass bottom boat.

• There is swimming from the island at specific times and snorkelling in its waters.

• Sailing times are: 11:00h - Arrival: 12:15h, 12:30h - Arrival: 14:00h (with bathroom), 18:30h - Arrival: 19:45 p.m (with bathroom) and 20:00h - Arrival: 21:00h (sunset), with a minimum of 10-persons required.

Finally, Experience a Sunset Cruise From the Port of Cartagena Each Thursday Throughout August

• On Thursday evenings during August you can experience a sunset trip aboard the Barco Turistico with on-board live music.

• Departing from the Club de Regatas in the port at Cartagena at 9pm the price is €15 each.

Events from July 2025

Zero Wave Awards - Cartagena - 3^rd July 2025

• La Quinta/La Solana were delighted to be invited to the ‘VI Zero Wave Gala of Awards Cartagena 2025’ at the Auditorium and Palace of Congress El Batel’.
  We were representatives of a group of businesses, who are part of the ‘LOVE La Manga Club Business Association’.

• The event was attended by Noelia Arroyo, mayoress of Cartagena, who presented various awards to persons, associations, entities and projects that contribute to the development of society in the Cartagena region and that stand out for their work.

• After the awards, guests attended a cocktail reception held in the Espacio Alviento of the Port of Cartagena.

 

 Update From the General Community Presidents Meeting - Held on 16^th July 2025

• Points of note from the meeting were:

• As of 3^rd July, the provisional Recepción (which was initially signed in 2023), including the Collaboration Agreement, was formally signed off and approved by the local Government Board of the Council.

• The Agreement, which will run for four years (with automatic renewal expected), is the first one approved anywhere in the Region of Murcia and will ensure that the GC can continue to control and run; security

  (including security points/ barriers and cameras), the cleaning of public roads, pavements and landscaped areas, maintenance of road signs/street lights, rubbish collection and pest control.

• The fire prevention programme started earlier this year, is delayed due to additional work and poor weather in March, but has already removed 24K trees and half a million tons of wood. It is hoped that it will be completed by the end of the year.

• Lastly, after many years, La Manga Club has commissioned and introduced a new logo, what are your thoughts on it?

 

Events & Activities for August 2025

64^th Cante de las Minas Festival - La Union 30^th July - 9^th August 2025

• An annual event since its inception in 1961, La Unión will again be the venue for the world's most important flamenco festival: the ‘Cante de las Minas’.

• The event will be held in the old La Unión Public Market, over a period of nearly 2-weeks and features the three disciplines of song, dance and guitar.

• Competing for the Lámpara Minera (Miners Lamp), award it is packed with authentic flamenco, singing and guitar playing and supports both emerging young artists, and renowned stars of the genre.

• Admission to all the festival's parallel activities, including the flamenco soirées, is free, but with limited availability, however tickets are required for the gala performances or the final phases of the competition.

• Tickets can be purchased either at the theatre box office on the day of the show, at the tourist office in La Unión, or on-line, if you wish to purchase in advance.

Rock Night at Playa Honda - 2^nd August 2025

• Enjoy a free night of music at nearby Playa Honda on the Mar Menor, on Saturday 2^nd August.

• There will be four different bands playing, starting at 7pm and continuing until late.

 

Mar Menor Music Legends - Los Alcázares - 7th-8th August 2025

• Los Alcázares will host a 2-night ‘Mar Menor Music Legends’ event on the 7^th & 8^th of August.

• Featuring a variety of fantastic tribute acts and a 70s and 80s disco party, it will be held at the Fairground Venue..

• Night 1 (August 7th): ‘Totally Tina’ (Tina Turner tribute) and ‘A Taste of Robbie’ (Robbie Williams tribute).

 Free Live Music - Chiringuito Estacio Playa - 7^th & 14^th August 2025

• Chiringuito Estacio Playa, located at Gran Vía km14 in La Manga del Mar Menor, will host two live music dates in August.

• On the evenings of Thursday the 7^th or Thursday the 14^th you can enjoy music on the beach for free (no booking required), but it is a good idea to arrive early, as tables can fill up quickly.

The Sal de Música Festival San Pedro del Pinatar - 12^th - 16^th August 2025

• The fourth edition of this festival combines musical performances with varied gastronomic offerings in a natural environment.

• Attendees will be able to enjoy starry nights by the sea, in an atmosphere that fuses music and local cuisine.

• There will be a variety of artists and DJ sets performing, including the iconic Gloria Gaynor, the unmistakable Paloma San Basilio, indie music singer, Iván Ferreiro and the talented and passionate voice of Vanesa Martín.

• The event opens from 8pm each evening, offering a unique gastronomic tour specially designed to allow sampling of the regions most varied and delicious flavours, whilst listening to performances from emerging artists on the ‘Mar Menor’ stage under a sunset sky.

• Later the entertainment moves to the ‘Sal de Música’ for the guest artists, before again retuning to the ‘Mar Menor’ stage for DJ sets and partying.

• July, the halfway point of the year and by far and away the busiest time for us all here at La Quinta.

• Summer is beginning to get into full swing as temperatures rise, seas warm up nicely and families start their vacations.

• June was also again a very busy month with unseasonably/record hot weather and many activities taking place including our inaugural Spanish themed Olé, Olé, Monday night dinner on the 2^nd June, which was a real smash with our guests!

• We also had a fantastic attendance of 100 guests at our ‘Full Moon’ White Party on 23^rd June.

• After our successful Radio Roadshow during May half term we were also proud to present a cheque for €3000 to a children’s cancer charity from Cartagena (see below).

• A warning to all of us that drive in Spain, the DGT have announced revised speeding fines.

• With fines ranging from €100 all the way up to a massive €600, it’s probably best to chill out and ease off the accelerator pedal when behind the wheel.

Additional Winter Flights into Corvera (RMU) Airport From the UK for 2025-26 Season

• Some good news for those flying into Corvera airport with Easyjet.

• From October 2025-March 2026, Easyjet has decided to extend two of its popular UK summer routes throughout the winter.

• The two UK airports benefiting from this announcement will be Bristol and London Luton.

• For Bristol, a twice weekly flight will operate from October until the end of March 2026 on Wednesday and Sunday mornings.

• Flights from London Luton will also operate from October until the end of March 2026, twice weekly on Tuesday and Saturday.

• Bookings can be made to and from both airports as of now.

Update of Events and Activities From May/June 2025

TKO Radio Roadshow Charity Event - 28^th May 2025 

• Well, what a fabulous day we all had under beautiful blue sunny skies with temperatures in the high 20’s.

• With TKO broadcasting live from La Quinta, an ABBA tribute band, the TKO teddy, Adrián showcasing his Tapas skills and lots of fantastic prizes donated by our seven sponsors it was very successful.

• The great news is that due to the our generous members and guests, we also raised €2100 for Pablo Ugarte children’s cancer charity in Cartagena.

• La Quinta added a further €900 from donations provided for our golf club rental, making the total €3000.

• Everything ran like clockwork throughout the day and everyone had a great time.

• It provided La Quinta with lots of advertising, promotion and allowed prospective renters, purchasers and La Solana patrons to experience all that the Club has to offer.

• I would personally like to thank TKO, our sponsors; Salazonnes Garre, Estrella Galicia, Marena Murray, La Manga Life, Vela Club, Conccord Cars and La Manga Rent a Car, and all that attended for their generosity and for embracing the event and lastly all of our hard working staff who helped to make the day so good.

  

La Quinta’s Spanish Themed Olé, Olé Monday Night Dinner - 2^nd June 2025

• This was the first time La Quinta has hosted a Spanish themed evening and it went down a storm.

• The food was superb as was the entertainment.

• Featuring the fabulous vocal talents of Vanessa Soul, who sang both Spanish and English songs, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all those that attended.

• The staff were also fantastic, all dressing up for the evening and Vanessa had everyone up dancing for most of the night.

• As well as a variety of themed Monday nights throughout the summer, we shall be hosting more ‘Olé, Olé’ nights on 7^th July, 11^th August, 8^th September and the 27^th October, so don’t miss them.

 

Fund Raising Donation Presentation to Pablo Ugarte Association - 4^th June 2025

• Following our very successful radio roadshow charity fund raising event on the 28^th May, on Wednesday 4^th June two representatives of our chosen charity, the Pablo Ugarte children’s cancer association in Cartagena, came to La Quinta to receive a cheque for €3000.

• €2100 was raised on the day, which was supplemented by €900, from donations for golf club hire at La Quinta.

• Mariano Ugarte Romero and Dori Zarco Gils, who were presented with the cheque said they were delighted that La Quinta had chosen their charity and would like to thank all those that supported it.

• I would reiterate that this is a very worthy cause and to thank again both those that donated and to our sponsors for providing some outstanding raffle prizes.

• On Thursday 5^th June, Carmen had a visit from her long lost sister and look alike -‘Lorena’….or did she??……

Forest Fire at La Manga Club - 15^th June 2025

• On the night of the 15th June, as the result of a lightning strike, a fire started in the hilly wooded area between the Central Services Building/Las Lomas and the new Al Lio restaurant, (where Maribel used to be).

• Emergency services were called and working alongside the LMC Security managed to contain and eventually extinguish the fire. 

• The use of the LMC security drone also proved invaluable in identifying the exact location of the blaze.

• If you witness anything that resembles a potential fire, please report it to Security immediately on +34 697 560 211.

 

Stop Press: La Quinta Receives Confirmed EU Funding!

• After a comprehensive application process, La Quinta is delighted to have at last been awarded by the EU Subventions commission, funding to further enhance our environmental sustainability programme.

• This is fundamental in order to be able to offer sustainable tourism now and in the future and these funds will greatly assist us in our drive towards reducing our carbon footprint and to show La Quinta's firm commitment towards eco-friendly tourism.

• The funds €75K and a further €211K, will also save us a considerable amount of money and will be used initially in three areas; installation of solar panels (to provide energy/reduce costs for the commercial side of the business), for enhanced IT/security systems and to provide natural hedge barriers for the gardens of the 100 villas.

• The second phase will see the replacement of our ageing laundry items, pool heaters and A/C units.

The 27^th San Javier International Jazz Festival 27^th June - 22^nd July 2025

• Starting in 1998 the festival has evolved into one of the most important cultural events in the Murcia region, and has achieved national and international status.

• Every year the festival hosts some of the most significant figures of the jazz world, as well as artists from other musical genres such as blues, soul, bossa nova and funk.

‘Virgen del Carmen’ Festivities - 16^th July 2025

• In Spain, la Virgen del Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen), is the patron of sailors and celebrated across Spain on the 16th July

• In the Region of Murcia she is celebrated by the fishermen of the Mar Menor, known as the ‘Brotherhood’ in the St Javier area of San Pedro del Pinatar/Santiago de la Ribera on the 16th July starting at around 7pm.

• The event includes a mass, a procession (with a crowned effigy of the Virgin in sumptuous robes and carrying the baby Jesus), children’s activities, culminating in a spectacular a fireworks display.

• It is a significant tourist attraction in the area and was declared an event of international interest in 1965.

 

La Mar de Músicas Festival - Cartagena 18^th - 23^rd July 2025

• Showcasing artists from around the globe this important festival celebrates different global cultures through different types of music.

• The five festival stages are located strategically throughout Cartagena, most offering wonderful Mediterranean views.

Simple Minds in Concert in Murcia on 19^th July 2025

• 1980/90’s Scottish super band - Simple Minds are appearing at the Bullring (Ronda de Garai s/n, Murcia, Cartagena, 30003), in Murcia at 9:30pm on the 19^th July 2025.

• Having sold 60 million records worldwide and had 24 top 40 hits during their career, it’s a not to be missed opportunity to see them in concert as part of their Alive and Kicking Tour.

The 45^th International Festival of Cante Flamenco - Lo Ferro - 21st-27th July 2025

• The 45^th festival of Cante Flamenco will be held this year at Calle Murillo in the village of Lo Ferro, Roldan near Torre Pacheco.

• The event, which has been running since 1980 consists of musical shows, concerts, recitals and performances that have flamenco as a common denominator and are brought together in the format of a festival.

The Abandoned Mines of San Cristóbal & Los Perules nr Mazarron.

• Located just outside of the town of Mazarrón, the mines have been around since Roman times yielding iron, lead, copper and alum and making the area very wealthy.

• The industry continued to be developed by successive cultures, finally reaching a peak in the 1840s, when mining fever was at its height.

• Mining continued until the 1950s when the mines themselves were eventually abandoned.

San Cristóbal

• The ruined mining settlement of San Cristóbal can be reached by a set of crumbling steps. There are lots of buildings to explore, a magnificent pit head and on the far side a surreal world of rocks and formations of intense colours.

Los Perules

• This mining area is akin to a psychedelic alien landscape with rocks and formations again of amazing colours and awe-inspiring rainbow water pools on the ground.

• At the top there are the pit heads, affording the most incredible views across the area.

Guided Wine Tasting and Museum Tours at Jumilla

• This tour combines a vineyard visit, wine tasting and a visit to the wine museum in Jumilla.

• The Jumilla Wine Museum has the second best viticulture exhibition in Spain, and has been open to the public since September 2018.

• Housing the history of the Jumilla’s wine culture, the tour encompasses all of the tasks and works related to the vine and wine.

• The guided visits are 15€ per person, including the museum tour, a guided tour of the vineyards, and a delightful wine tasting of four local wines, tapas, and a cheese board.

Visit the Bolvonegro Straits 

• Crossing over a narrow canyon formed by the Alhárabe river, the Bolvonegro Strait is one of the most spectacular places of natural beauty in the Murcian Region and has fascinating stone formations carved by the Moratalla river.

• Take a walk through this picturesque area and see cascades, rock pools and natural formations with a wooden bridge at the end of the route, which crosses the river and where the highest and narrowest rock sculptures can be found.

• After this there is an open area where the water is dammed and where a path back along the river is located.

• How to get there. Take the road from Moratalla to Calasparra (RM-715). At KM18 there is a crossroads with a signpost to Paraje Bolvonegro on the left. Take this track for approximately 1km where a sign indicating the beginning of the path can be found.

   

The Murcian Fairytale Fortress Near La Azohia

• The scenic Castillitos Military Battery, locally known as Batería de Castillitos, is a real hidden treasure.

• Built between 1933 and 1936 to prevent enemy ships entering the bay and attacking the port of Cartagena this is an impressive construction built in an ornate style reminiscent of an ancient medieval castle.

• Inside the towers are gun control bunkers, with the highlight being the huge 381mm guns with 17m long barrels.

• The Castillitos Battery can be visited for free and is open all year round.

• Getting there: The location is about an hours drive from La Manga and can be found at: Batería de Castillitos RM-E23, 30868, Murcia.

• Although there is a steep drive along a winding road, at the top, there are some breathtaking views, which definitely makes it worth the journey.

Chairman’s Blog - Season 4, Edition 1 (June 2025)

 

• Well we’ve reached a milestone with the blog as it enters its 4^th season, I never thought it would last this long, but I am pleased it’s still going strong and you are still enjoying it.

• I do intend to keep them going, but as I’ve covered many topics finding content is an increasing challenge so they may be a tad shorter in future.

• Anyway enough of that and a very warm welcome to flaming June the month of the summer solstice.

• June is probably one of the best months to visit, with great temperatures, long, long days and fabulously warm nights for al fresco dining.

• The month of June is set to be a busy one for us as it was in May, with much taking place both at La Quinta and the surrounding areas, such as our inaugural hosted private communion, VE lunch, TKO Radio Roadshow, Ruta de Tapa, golf tournament and the first of our themed Monday night dinner of the season, an Aloha party, (see more in the event updates below).

• So if you are visiting this month, I hope you have a brilliant time and please do support us by using La Solana as much as possible during your stay.

Update of Events and Activities From May 2025

La Solana’s First Hosted Communion - 3^rd May 2025

• In order to maximise La Solana’s potential and to generate additional income, we are expanding our use of the facility by hosting more private events, such as birthdays, anniversaries, communions, wedding receptions etc.

• On the 3^rd of May we hosted our first private communion for 50+ Spanish guests.

• It was a beautiful event and received much praise from the group that attended, so much so that it resulted in two additional future group bookings.

• It did not affect members or rentals as the event area was sympathetically divided from the terraces and other spaces.

• In addition, we already have a number of other reservations for events both this and into next year.

• Well done to team La Solana for helping to deliver a truly memorable day for all those attending.

The La Manga Owners Summer Golf Tournament 3^rd - 4^th May 2025

• This golf tournament was again a very successful event, played under lovely blue skies.

• As you can see from the photos, La Quinta/La Solana were one of the events sponsors and our tee boards were strategically placed for maximum visual impact.

• Their evening dinner and prize giving for 97 guests, was also held at La Quinta on Sunday evening.

• Thanks to Suzanne Pealing for again organising this twice yearly event and for patronising us here in La Solana.

• The next competition will be held in late November.

 

Par 47 Update From the General Community Presidents Meeting - 7^th May 2025

• Due to the continued deterioration of Par 47, the topic was raised as an agenda item at the meeting.

• After a somewhat passionate and heated exchange, Àngel Holgardo (the director of Hesperia), agreed to undertake some immediate remedial action.

• True to his word the next day a tractor and digger began to clear the site.

• A meeting was then held on Friday 9^th at Par 47, with representatives of Hesperia, the GC, La Quinta and neighbouring communities to highlight the condition of the area and to seek a future solution.

• It transpired that Hesperia have plans for the site but are not prepared to discuss them until the end of 2025, so watch this space for further updates.

• Àngel Holgado reiterated to all that Par 47 is private property and unauthorised persons should not be entering the area.

• Therefore, we ask all our members and guests not to access or walk across Par 47.

 

VE Day 80^th Anniversary Lunch at La Solana 8^th May 2025

• We hosted a VE day 80^th anniversary lunch on Thursday the 8^th May.

• Offering traditional meat pie and mashed potatoes prepared by our chef, the lunch was a real success and was enjoyed by 50+ guests, who celebrated this historic day and sampled both our pie and our wonderful selection of other food, whilst listening to a great musical selection of WWII songs.

 

La Manga Club IV Ruta de Tapa 2025 16th-25th May 2025.

 

• The 4^th La Manga Club Ruta de Tapa took place between the 16^th & 25^th May, with some 15 restaurants participating in this culinary extravaganza.

• Our superb offering created by our chef Adrián Ros, was an oriental inspired, steamed gluten free Prawn and Avocado empanada/dumpling with pink sauce & Tobiko eggs.

 

• The competition was strongly contested with La Quinta selling over 450 Tapa during the week. The eventual winners were;

• 1^St Los Molinos, 2^nd Flute Bar & 3^rd The Racquets Club

 

The La Manga del Mar Menor to Santiago de la Ribera Ferry Resumes - 17^th May 2025

• From the 17^th May this ferry summer service resumes.

• Departing from the Jetty at Playa Barnuevo in Santiago de Ribera and from Dársena ‘0’ at Puerto Thomás Maestre (La Manga), it runs from Wednesday to Sunday (no service on Monday or Tuesday), at the following times:

• From Santiago, 11:30, 13:30 & 17:30.

• From La Manga, 10:15, 12:30 & 16:30.

• Please note, due to required maintenance these times may vary over the next few weeks.

TKO Radio Roadshow @ La Quinta - 28^th May 2025

• With no less than seven (7), event sponsors (La Manga Rent a Car, Salazones Garre, La Manga Life, Marena Murray, Estrella Galica, Vela Club & Conccord Cars), this was a tremendous event for La Quinta.

• We had lots of guests attending on the day, selling many raffle tickets and raising €2100 in support of our designated Cartagena children’s cancer charity - The Pablo Ugarte Association.

• Thank you to everyone who attended and for their generosity in supporting this event and the charity.

• Everyone, adults and children alike had a brilliant time and even the weather was on our side, which was beautiful and warm with cloudless skies throughout the day.

• As well as the live broadcast, we were also entertained by a fabulous ABBA tribute band!

• So, the day was a huge success, an excellent showcase, profitable and also great for our charity.

• We also thank all our sponsors for supporting the event and for providing their very generous raffles prizes.

 

Upgrade to Beaches in La Manga & Cabo de Palos.

• Cartagena Council is to invest €121K to improve the public beaches in La Manga and Cabo de Palos.

• Ahead of the summer season the beaches will be refurbished to ensure they are in pristine condition with additional maintenance focused on promenades, including street furniture, signs, waste bins, railings and the surrounding areas.

• The work will be carried out by the Coastal Department, overseen by councillor Gonzalo López Pretel in; Cala Reona, Calafría & Playa Levante in Cabo de Palos and in Cala de Pino, Cavanna, Puerto Bello and El Vivero in La Manga.

• In addition to this, €54K will be spent on four new lifeguard towers.

 

 Two-Month AP-7 tunnel Closure on Road from Alicante to Cartagena and La Manga 

• A heads up for all those of you who fly into Alicante airport and use the AP7 to drive down to La Manga.

• Due to an accident with a lorry and a subsequent significant fire, the tunnel at Pilar de la Horadada will be closed for 2-months for repairs.

• This will no doubt cause delays with traffic being rerouted along the N-332, a parallel but single lane road with several roundabouts.

• The 800-meter tunnel, which has been in operation since 1999 is normally used daily by approximately 19,000 vehicles.

 

The Book Benches at Cabo de Palos! A Novel Idea?

• Situated at Cabo de Palos's Paseo de la Barra are these new and unusual book-shaped benches that have surprised visitors to the town.

• The benches are unique and pay homage to an author from nearby Cartagena, Arturo Pérez-Reverte, inviting residents and visitors to sit and enjoy a relaxing and reflective moment, whilst overlooking the Mediterranean sea.

• So next time you’re down at Cabo, why not check out these fabulous benches, a great photo opportunity and of course there’s no need to book! Sorry…LOL.

 

From Cabo de Palos to Antarctica: A Seven Months Voyage of Discovery! 

• On October 13^th 2024, Spaniards Paco Henarejos and Deva Prendes set sail for Antarctica from nearby Cabo de Palos, sailing together for four months, until Deva returned home by plane from Ushuaia.

• Paco however decided to continued navigating the challenging journey alone and after seven months and 17,000 nautical miles (31,500 kms), returned to Cabo de Palos on his sailboat El Holanda on the 9^th May 2025.

• The initial journey with his partner Deva took him from Cabo de Palos to Deception Island in Antarctica, before as mentioned, Deva, returned home.

• Several boats set sail from Cabo de Palos at 8am, to meet and accompany him into the port, including Luis Herrador's schooner Atrevida, from which photographs were taken of his emotional arrival.

• Paco is an experienced sailor and expert navigator (having crossed the Atlantic several times), was born in Lo Pagán, San Pedro del Pinatar, and is a member of a family of fishermen. 

• His boat was a 44-foot-long (13.5 meters) yacht, specially fitted out for the long voyage, that included stops at Fuerteventura, Brazil & Argentina then after crossing Cape Horn, the Spanish Army base on Deception Island in Antarctica.

• They also met with the Cartagena based oceanographic vessel Hespérides, whilst in Ushuaia.

• During the journey, numerous water samples were taken to study microplastics in the ocean and the crew were regularly accompanied by pods of dolphins, photographed penguin colonies on icebergs, and were surprised to find themselves surrounded by hundreds of whales in an Antarctic bay.

• Now that the voyage is over there will be time to evaluate this scientifically important journey, which has undoubtedly been an enriching experience.

 

Events & Activities in June 2025

8^th Rugby Golf Classic - La Manga Club 5^th - 8^th June 2025

• Like rugby? Enjoy golf? Then this could be the event for you.

• The Rugby Golf Classic 2025, will be held from Thursday 5th June to Sunday 8th June and brings together rugby and other sporting legends to play in a two-day golf tournament to raise money for charity.

• This year it will be for The Matt Hampson Foundation who provide physical and emotional support to young people following life-changing sporting injuries.

• In 2024, £40,000 was raised taking the total fundraising to over £700,000.

• Some of the previous participants have been: Willie John Mcbride CBE, Jason Leonard OBE, Lawrence Dallaglio OBE, Roger Uttley OBE, Simon Shaw MBE, Joe Worsley MBE, to name but a few.

 

st Javier AIRE 25 - Airshow 14^th - 15^th June 2025

• On the 14^th-15^th June 2025, St Javier will host their Festival Aéreo Internacional (AIRE 25), (airshow festival), featuring a large number of military aerobatic teams including Patrulla Águila and the Swiss team, Patrouille Suisse.

• Spain’s helicopter display team, Patrulla Aspa, are also participating.

• Celebrating the 40^th anniversary of the famous Eagle Patrol, the festival is expected to attract in excess of 500,000 people with the aircraft flying over the Mar Menor and the beaches around Santiago de la Ribera, adjacent to San Javier air base.

• Some of the planes that you will be able to see include CASA C-101 Aviojet, Eurocopter EC-120B, Aermacchi MB-339, BAE Systems Hawk T1, Northrop F-5, Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet, McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, AV-8B Harrier II and the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Ultimate Tour - La Manga Club - 19^th- 22^nd June 2025

• Held over 3-days at La Manga Club, this is an end of season men’s and ladies multi-sport event.

• Comprising of competitions in men’s football, ladies netball and rugby for both, it will be an entertaining few days.

• There will also be social events culminating in an awards gala dinner with music and dancing on the last night.

• So why not go along, watch and enjoy this sporting/social event?

 

Rock Imperium Festival 26th-29th June 2025 - Cartagena

• For all of you rockers out there, the 2025 Rock Imperium is back in Cartagena from Thursday 26^th June to Sunday 29^th.

• Held once again at the Parque el Batel in Cartagena, there will be an extensive line up of bands such as Scorpions, Till Lindemann, The Cult, King Diamond, Blind Guardian, Airbourne, Stryper and the recently added glam and hard rock icon Michael Monroe.

The Monte Arabí Rock Formations Near Yecla

• Monte Arabí is a breathtaking rock formation created over time that captivates visitors with its honeycombed cliffs, caves, and shelters.

• This is an area rich in history and is home to prehistoric rock art known as the Cantos de Visera rock paintings, that are recognised by UNESCO and which date back to the Neolithic period.

• Surrounded by Aleppo pines and diverse wildlife, it also boasts the highest bird diversity in the Jumilla-Yecla highlands.

• Guided tours of the rock paintings are available by appointment but require a group of a minimum of 15 people, booked 48 hours in advance.

• Access to the site is via the A-18 (Yecla - Montealegre del Castillo) road or the MU-404 (Yecla – Fuenteálamo) road.

Wild Birds in and Around La Manga Club.

• One of our members and recent visitor is an avid bird watcher.

• She wrote to me asking if I could feature some of the birds she has spotted whilst walking around the area and sent me a list of those she had seen.

• I am of course more than happy to comply, so here are a selection of images I have found of the birds she has come across, many of which we don’t readily see in the UK.

• As I finalise this blog, I am actually over at the club, enjoying a holiday with friends and family, so I hope to catch up with you if you are visiting in early June.
